So most new cars come with some sort of lane-keeping “helper,” how about one that would actually help?
Camera detects the presence of a solid painted line to the car’s left, indicating that it’s in the left lane. Super-smart computer compares vehicle speed with the speed limit in that location (using GPS or whatever).
Plug the following into this nifty algorithm:
S= vehicle speed, SL= present speed limit
If S GET OUT OF THE WAY YOU FUCKING MORON Then self-steer into the right lane where it belongs. 1
plus 10, eh? So I’ve I’m not doing 90 on I15 I should move over? Im not sure my cruiser can maintain 90. 2
neh.. what we need is a fully autonomous capable car that does absolutely nothing to assist until the car detect its driver would prefer playing with his phone over paying attention.. at wich point the car releases the seatbelt and tips the driver out of the car before driving itself back to the dealership to be sold to someone else (edit ) wait... actually yours is pretty good too.... i just saw lane assist and knee jerked right past the left lane part...lol 0
I would change it to do this when it detects an overtaking car behind it, but otherwise yes. 0
Are you still passing people at <90 on I15? 1
If I go 80 on I15 (speed limit 80) I pass about 30%, 65% keep pace with, 5% get passed by. 1
flawed in few spots.
2) SL+10 is speeding... so ticket?
4) what if you are in traffic. Speed limit says 55. You are in left lane. Traffic is crawling at 5mph. Now what? I get where you are going with this.... get out of left lane asap. Sure. But that’s not the way to do it. Way to do it is make passing on the right offense punishable by death or something similar like they do on autobahn. Make tailgating similar punishable offense. And lastly, electric chair to anyone who is sitting in left lane for no damn reason. But I also think those laws above require a decent speed limit. In Austria speed limit is 130kmh. In germany on parts of the autobahn without restrictions, there is obviously no speed limit. You need that so you can pass. 1
Seriously? Ive never been on 15, but it seems they’ve found the natural maximum. Up and down the East coast, I’m getting blasted by at 80 in a 75, passing only truckers. 3
Just look at all these monsters driving below the speed limit in the left lane! 0
When they went to 80 they did it in test sections first to see how people would react and they found they didn’t just jump to 85-90. When they opened it up to the entire stretch they did a year long study and found most people were happy just going 80. Odd but true. 0
The last time I was on I87, north of Albany I had my cruise set at 90 and had to stay in the slow lane... I can also remember pushing my 2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring to 112 trying to keep up with the fast lane... No exits for 10s of miles and a near-zero police patrol presence really make that road fun/frightening. You would want to keep your cruiser on secondaries up there... 0
What is shockingly odd is that they bothered to do the study, and actually accept the results.
This happened near me :
http://www.colchestersun.com/speed-limit-route-7-stretch-will-drop-40-mph/
The TL;DR version is :
Construction company asks town to reduce speed limit on very busy state highway because they want to build stores, etc. on a plot of land they have that is currently condos, which are accessed from a side street that has its own very long turn lane.
State does survey, finds speed is set correctly
Construction company complains to town
Town appeals state decision
State rolls over
Traffic goes from suck to hella suck, for pedestrians and stores that do not exist

The system works. 0

The correct way to do it is make being PASSED on the right an offense. Making it so the guy behind you clearly don’t care about gets a ticket for going past you isn’t any extra incentive to move over, rather it’s incentive to stay there, feel self-righteous and watch all the people you’ve pissed off get the tickets you deserve for obstructing traffic. If it’s a ticketable offense to be passed on the right, you both avoid clogging the roads even further by eliminating a legal pass, and provide incentive for left-lane police to GTFAC.

The idea here is that if the fastest cars are zooming by in left lane, any shmuck passing on the right might end up running into a slower going vehicle which was there legally. this encourages people to pass on the left. Now those who sleep in left lane... should be shoved into cannon and shot into the outer space. 0
Better idea: Teach people how to drive properly. Have severe penalties for those who think they’re above the law. Remove all tech from cars. 0
The thing is, while it encourages people to pass on the left, it doesn’t encourage the root of the problem to move their asses, and takes away what is essentially a pressure bypass that is safe 95% of the time. It’s treating a symptom. Making it so that the person being passed is committing an offense is treating the disease itself.

Yeah. I can see where the passing on the right rule was added after the rule about killing left lane sleepers. We need a convoy of cops on the road enforcing no one drives in left lane unless passing. Only exception in heavy traffic. People fuck around behind the wheel too much. Cell phones, radio, make up, burgers, reading newspapers, shaving. No one looks in rear view mirror to see if anyone is up on them. 0

Really, this is correct, but it’s hard to enforce while the limits are artificially low. Someone can be speeding in the left lane and still holding up traffic. Guess who the cop’s gonna take? That’s right, the guy who gets fed up and goes by. Low hanging fruit gonna win every time.

1) left lane exit ramp. You may be exiting but speed limit says 55. You’re exiting so you’re going a bit slower. Maybe 35. Boom. You’re no longer exiting. You are in the right lane missed your exit and next exit is 4 years from now.
3) middle of the night. No one on the road. Be in any lane you want unless we go with your formula.
