Gotta clean up those points and check the plug gaps.
When you go to start, don’t forget to pump the gas 3 times
My X-type is too a real Jaguar

Eh, they take well to boost and hold up well. You just have to change oil every 3k religiously and beat the living hell out of them.
They also sound quite amazing for a small V6.

Looks like a bad idea I could get behind.

Until the water pump fails and fills the oil pan with coolant

218k on mine, 387k on my friend’s. If you do the timing chain service at 100k intervals as it should be, you replace the water pump when doing the chain and never have the water pump issue.
The biggest issue with the 2.7L was owners. If you take care of them, they will take care of you.
Was it a pickier motor than most, sure. Was it a bad motor, hell no.

They have a timing chain interval!? I’ve seen water pumps fail way before 100k. Maybe the rest of the motor is fine, but the water pump placement is a stupid design.

80-100k due to the guide design/material. Its plainly stated in the manual.
I will agree, the placement of the pump is stupid. But plenty of stupid designs exist, even today.
My experience with them has been very good, especially in the smaller cars like the Stratus sedans. They offered respectable performance, took very well to mods, gave over 200k of reliable service, and got respectable mileage. I was very diligent about maintenance, as I am on all my vehicles, so that likely made the difference.

Timing chain interval just sounds so strange to me. The whole point of having a chain is that it shouldn’t need regular replacement like a belt.
They do exist. I work on some!
How difficult/expensive/labor intensive is the chain to replace? It’s amazing how much of an effect regular maintenance has long term.

The chain costs roughly $1200 in parts if you can do it yourself. If not, it costs around $3500 to have it done.
A little pricey, but in reality, $3500 for 80-100k is cheap.
It’s amazing how much of an effect regular maintenance has long term.
I think this factor has a lot to do with all the “Dodge Issues”. People fail to maintain them, given the general people who own them, then they want to complain when they’re un-maintained vehicle breaks.

Sounds pretty expensive for a single maintenance item for an entry level model though. At least to me it does.
Lack of maintenance kills German cars pretty quickly too.

I did the chain once in 218k on my 06 Stratus. Outside of that, I had to rebuild the suspension once. I bought the car with 12k miles for $7k IIRC. So $7k+$1200 for timing+$1200 for suspension meant I had $9400 in a car that gave me 206k miles of fun reliable service for 6+yrs. Not many cars that can make that claim if you actually stop and lay out numbers.
The new timing chain, water pump, and guide design that you buy as replacements are supposed to be good for far more than the factory interval, so if you do it right the first time, you really shouldn’t have to do it again after.
