This is just to remind you that "V-drive" was a thing.

Didn’t Stubby Bob also use a V-Drive but in a more boat-like application?

It would seem so. Boat V-drives are very much a thing still, car “V-drives” or possibly more properly “trident drives”, not so much.

4WD on a platform not requiring low range, and typically with too much difficulty to adapt to related platform 4WD. The two most typical examples being heavy duty Ford and Chevrolet vans. Also a way to get something more akin to a modern AWD.

I guess technically it’s not a V-drive, because it’s all behind the engine, but still...

Also just saw your other responses on Galaxie, gimme a bit.

There’s also a DAF military vehicle that had a split drive at the transfer case and had separate drivelines up and down the left and right sides.

Kinja'd!!!

The Alfa is kind of like how DAF’s cars split power before the actual ratio stage...

Did you like my spergfest on the Ford front suspension cranks?

It’s worse than that. You probably can’t even pin it to the front by disengaging 4wd. It’s full-time AWD with option to lock, if I’m not mistaken. And, it’s a divorced transfer case. So, your options for *new* driveline vibration are:

Hub spline and tightness issues

Kingpin related noise (causing phase issues with the steering U-joint), left or right.

Front suspension related misalignment noise (about four-five possibilities, left or right)

Steering U-joint, left or right.

Transfer box, left or right (input shaft, output shaft *or* gear)

Middle support bracket/mount, left or right

Three U-joints, left or right shaft

Two out-of-balance segments, left or right

Transfer case mounts

Transfer case noise, gears, pinion bearing, 3x output shaft bearings

Transmission-to-transfer-case shaft - balance, two U-joints.

By my count, that’s ~43 separate things more than a 2wd that might go awry and make noise.

It really might be. I just did a quick count, and I think there are over 40 things that could go wrong and start making noise:

Fortunately, you’d be able to catch about half of those or more just moving your hand down the driveline, checking for motion out of axis and any sloppiness in being twisted. Less fortunately, a certain amount of both is probably normal, so you’d have to... calibrate yourself. Get an idea of what “bad” would be versus natural consequences of a multi-step steel python-drive.

Not just DAF. Panhard used something similar on the EBR.

The first cars to use this kind of setup were actually 2wd. 1932 Alfa Romeo P3 is the first that I know of. The point was the reduction of unsprung weight and better placement for the driver.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Yes, It’s an Alfa Romeo raced by Scuderia Ferrari.

Couple of years later they used the same idea in 1935 Alfa Romeo 16C Bimotore which had two engines and the rear mounted one blocked the place for a normal differential. This car was produced by Scuderia Ferrari from Alfa Romeo parts.

Kinja'd!!!

Here’s how the tricky v-drive differential worked. GM’s version is likely quite similar but there’s probably some method to disengage the front drive. Alfa Romeo’s version allowed disengaging the rear engine but it couldn’t be engaged while either of the engines was running.

but there’s probably some method to disengage the front drive

You’d think so, but one of the advantages highlighted in the 1972 magazine article I posted, from when the system was under development by Dana, was better function on-road in modern-style AWD operation. So, I don’t believe disengagement was prioritized.

I guess they had to have a second differential in the same package then. This should raise the complexity of the system quite a lot. I’m quite interested to know how it’s made.
