I built a standing shelf when I moved into my house three years ago. I’ve now decided the shelves take up valuable real estate, so I’m looking to make a change.
There are three shelves, 2' deep by 8' long and boxed with 2x4 underneath. The plan is to keep the top shelf where it’s at, and to put the other two at the same height. I’m just trying to figure out the best way to do it for the least amount of money.
I could use slotted angle...
Or I could use chain with a locking link
Or chain with a turnbuckle
Or lag eyes with wire.
And then it’s a question about which eye to use, lag or bolt....
To many options, not enough clarity. Ugh.

I just used lags and 2x4s. Lag bolted a 2x4 across the ceiling to the attic joists, lagged 2x4s to that, lagged 2x4s to those for the base, and plywood floor. I have about 200lbs on each shelf (one over each door) and can do pull ups on them and they don’t make a squeak.

This is what I would do. Although I’d probably just use 3-1/2" deck screws.

I did this this winter! 2X4 (2X3 would have been more than enough), lag hooks and turnbuckles. turnbuckles are a must, to play with the angle so stuff don’t fall on your head. Everything is screwed in the studs.

I used 3 1/2" lags because impact driver.

I’d use my impact driver on the screws too. Lags are just overkill, unless you’re putting a ton of weight on it ... not that overkill is a bad thing though!

That’s a nice way to do it. Simple and adjustable.

Also, the shelf wall double row wall brackets are nice to use for adjustable shelves. I’ve got them across the front of my 2 car. I think I bought 6-8 verticals and a crap ton of shelf brackets and 4-6 16”x 8’ long shelves. They work great and are adjustable. And no need to run supports to the floor. I will be taking them with me to my next garage.
