Every number sucks. I have four months to figure out what I’m going to do. My wallet disagrees with every opinion. How’s Oppo doing? I’ve got a few hours to kill.

Buy 5-7 years old. That’s the best part of the depreciation curve for most cars.

Good! Keeping super busy, but I think I’m having fun doing what I’m doing. How about you? Rumour has it you’ve taken a vacation?

Considering it, but the pickings here in Saskatchewan are not the best.

So far: WRX, GTI, Civic Sport, Mazda3, and the Fit. I told my dad about the Fit, and he said no, go for the WRX. Unfortunately, he’s not willing to help out with the down payment.

I replaced the struts and springs on my Lancer a month ago but it hadn’t been quite right (clunks, creaks, grinds, etc). I had everything narrowed down to the nuts on the rear not being tightened down all the way (my bad!) so I fixed it last weekend. Except I discovered a missing nut on the rear lower driver control arm so the car sat all week. I got the new nut on today and huzzah! No more bad sounds from the rear.
...except there’s now a terrible grinding sound in the front driver’s side.
Want to buy a 2011 Lancer Ralliart? lol. Seriously though - the only reason I’m making it work is so I can sell it. I’ve basically done the full 60k service on it so the new owner won’t have to. I am way too nice.

Yes I won’t shut up about it because I have never taken a legit vacation in my adult life (I don’t count 2 nights of camping as a real vacation, which is what I usually end up doing). So it’s an incredibly novel experience though I realize 99% of people are unamused, because they have had real vacations before.

True, but as I’ve always feared: things cost money. Including cleansing my brain of thoughts of work.

Yeah. It happens. Last weekend I also did spark plugs on my Miata and when I got the 4th one out, I found that a previous mechanic had used a timesert and rethreaded the plug socket. I had to overnight a timesert so that I would have a working car for Monday.
My exocet is an electronics mess ;)
I am living that project-car-hell kind of life, haha. What kind of a car you looking for? Daily? Used? New?

Ah a quintessential everyday enthusiast list. I would say go WRX or GTI unless your budget restricts it. As for the WRX because of super-high resale value you’re better off getting a new one vs a 2-3 year old one, maybe even a lease because residual value are typically high.
From a financial standpoint used 3-7 year car financed at the lowest rate from your bank/credit Union/dealer is the best decision.

Ouch. Well, at least it got sorted out? Although I’d be having a word with the mechanic if you can find them.
Looking for a daily. Considering smaller cars and hatchbacks. New or used doesn’t really matter to me. And unfortunately, I won’t know the exact specifics of what I need for another eight weeks.
Once I have one car, then I can start looking into joining project car hell with you.

The lease rates are actually cheaper for the GTI vs the WRX, funny enough.
The unfortunate thing is I can’t really plan ahead for buying a used car, otherwise I’d have more options.

Any interest in the Elantra GT hatch? I ask because I think it could be notably cheaper than all the options you named.

My girlfriend already has one, actually! I like it, but I want something... I dunno, different. I’d like an Elantra GT Sport, but I’m not 100% on it if I can get a GTI for a similar amount.

After watching a LeMons wrap-up video, I now and forever have to call them the Kim Jong Elantra.

Hah. Yeah - not worth beating yourself up over it if your requirements might change before buying.
Yeah, the Miata has 203k miles on it so it’s bound to have some hidden issues. I’ve been through damn near everything on it mechanically at this point. I put some marvel mystery oil in it today to see if it would clear up the cold start clacking and it seems to have worked (common issue with Hydraulic Lash Adjuster). I took it out for a German tune up and man, I love how sweet that engine is above 5k RPM. It has me thinking about doing a mild rebuild on it with ITB’s.
I really love this guy’s setup:

My opinion is buy used in cash. Be ready to do $1000 in repairs on any used car. A car should last 1 year for every $1000 dollars you pay for it.
