I applied for a casting call for Stranger Things next week, but I noticed something interesting in the notes... they say they’re looking for vintage cars, too, (it’s set in 85 and they’re allowing up to 1986 for some reason) but they won’t allow any black, white, or red vehicles. What’s that about? Why those colors? Why not also grey, or orange? Is there some film-related reason for it?

Those colors might be reserved for the hero cars?

It might not suit the scene (mood of the scene, nighttime/daytime, you name it..)

yep, something like that. Directors and screenwriters frequently bury hints or deeper meanings in things like what characters are wearing, placement of objects in scenes (e.g. in The Godfather, if you saw oranges in a scene, a character was about to die.)
(it’s set in 85 and they’re allowing up to 1986 for some reason)
because of model years. 1986 model year vehicles would have been built starting in calendar year 1985.

Black cars are a nightmare to film at night, as for white and red I’m not sure but it could be they are going for a certain look, Red is too happy, White may get washed out on camera during the day. They seem to use some filter on stranger things to make sure it always looks overcast.

Because back in the 70s and 80s there were a lot more brown and yellow cars

I might watch Stranger Things if I get to see a sweet-ass blue/blue 2tone over blue first-generation Taurus wagon...

I love the cars on that show. So crappy, so malaise. Except for the Chiefs truck.

Likely more for ambiance than anything. I have also noticed the show seems to prefer American makes, even if just rebadged, and they don’t seem to use many of the more square foreign cars (I believe the only two I can think of are Barb’s VW Rabbit and Steve’s BMW). By 83, there should be a lot more Toyotas, Datsuns, Mazdas, and Subarus wandering around, and by 85 you should start seeing the wildly popular Hyundai Excels appearing as new cars.

I’m going to guess because in many shows based in the past(and some in the present) Black is an ominous color for a vehicle. As for the other two they stick out especially on malaise era vehicles. Could be other reasons though too.

Small town America was much slower to accept them dang furrin’ cars than those in the big cities, especially in middle America.

What’s funny is that they bought a lot of cheap rebadged cars and simply cheap cars in general. I remember my first rides in Dodge Colts (4th and 5th gens) and Subaru Justys in North Dakota in early 1988...
In CA there was plenty of malaise. Only sad weird people that ate at McDonalds a lot owned Toyotas (and to this day I associate the two in my mind).
