They are as hard as any other noodle, but since they are so thin they are easier to crunch (I suppose). But I think what we are up against here is tweens who don’t want to have to be bothered with waiting for something to cook or having to cook it themselves.

A friend of mine lived in Poland as a kid and said his soccer teammates did this. Seems weird to me given that you can cook them in three minutes or if you want to snack on something crunchy you can find better chips and/or crackers. And make no mistake, chips probably wouldn’t be any less healthy, those ramen blocks are high-calorie, high-fat, and high-salt.

and then lost it when I read,

It’s simple enough. Boil water, add noodles, add the powder, stir and bring back to the boil then simmer for a few minutes.

Anything else is just not doing it properly.

It’s mind boggling that there’s so many flavours.

I have to consider your own culinary proclivities when I read your comment. And remember, they are 12 years old. But yes, cooking ramen is ridiculously simple, so much so that I require them to do it themselves. Therein is perhaps the main reason that they eat it raw.

And, despite all the different flavors, my experience is that most of them taste like salt.

I used to do that, even as an adult. No flavor packet, though - just the basic Ramen. Save the flavor packet to mix with rice or something. I don’t think my teeth could take it these days.
