So for the past few weeks I’ve been on a ketogenic diet. My wife bought me a book, I’ve googled some of the info, and there’s nothing seriously against it. Some anti-low-carb-high-fat zealots are quite vocal, but the weight loss and health data don’t lie. Mayo clinic has some conclusive studies as well, and experts (Actual MDs) express some reservations about cholesterol and super-high protein content.
With that said, it seems to be working. I’m down 11 pounds since the middle of April and down 5 since my first weigh-in on Sunday morning.
One of the comments I saw on the
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
was excellent and fully represents my attitude toward almost any diet or health program.:
“The zealotry either way shits me. It’s another tool in the box, good in specific contexts.”
I’m 6'3" and started at 340 last spring. I dropped under 310 last summer, but gained back 10 and have been maintaining at 320 since the Holiday season (so much stuffing, and potatoes, and mac’n’cheese!)
I weighed in today and it said 309.7. My goal is around 230. I want to be able to sit comfortably in an S2000.
Thanks for reading.

Only problem I can find with Keto is you’ll shit yourself for a while after you start eating carbs again.

Key to Keto is staying ridgidly on the ketogenic side of things. I studied biochemistry in college and the ketogenic pathway is cool and all, but people “go keto” but don’t actually switch over and then end up with a bunch of health problems between the unhealthy diet for traditional pathways and extra strain on their kidneys and I think the endocrine system? Been a while since I studied it...

I read everything I can on it, and I stay on the ketogenic side - checking ketone bodies in urine daily and all that.

If this can be maintained long term I’ll keep it up.

Everything I’ve heard about Leto is you will lose a ton of weight but...you have to stay on it because the second your system detects delicious carbs it starts storing those right back up so it’s an all or nothing kinda thing

Nice going. Keep after it! I think the key is to actually change your lifestyle to something that you can stick with long term. Keto may be the first step to make the big change you want, but transitioning to a way you can happily eat your entire life is the way to make it stick and keep your gains (losses).

I spoke with someone recently whose doctor told him to get off keto immediately after several months on it, fwiw. Don’t know the exact specifics of why.

Keto seems to work well for obese people, as well as bodybuilders. IMO it’s a little hard to sustain for average people or slightly overweight people.
On the plus side, just moving your body mass around burns a ton of calories, so you should see the weight drop quicky. Just don’t get discouraged when it slows down after a few months — that’s normal. At that point you can switch it up a bit — paleo or similar.
Great work so far, Steve!

That’s great. I’m very similar to you in weight and height and have been working at it too. Weight struggles are the single hardest thing I’ve had to deal with in the last few decades.
Also, are we really all going to pretend like that picture isn’t up there? I’m disgusted and intrigued at the same time. It’s like the special effects from Eddie Murphy version of the Nutty Professor were applied to a car.
