Kinja'd!!!

My family is jetting into CLT in July to see the Dortmund v. Liverpool match at BoA Stadium. We will have a full day free before we return, and we are likely going to rent a car. Any suggestions on where to stay, info about parking at BoA, or what to do with a free day?

Much obliged.

Go to the Epicenter in the city. It’s a giant center in Charlotte that’s like three stories of restaurants, bars, etc.

Eat at Cook out, get a tray. you wont regret it. I liked doing the Charlotte motor speedway tour even though I’m not a huge Nascar fan. July would be a wonderful time to spend a day at Lake Norman as it will be very hot and humid in Charlotte. There are some fun hikes not too far away as well.

Charlotte is a banker’s town, and thus entertainment is very much of the “chain-restaurant and movie-theater” type. But there are a bunch of cool things to do that can be kid-friendly:

Here’s “Charlotte’s Got a Lot,” from our Regional Visitor’s Authority.

And here’s some personal observation:

This is our “bohemian arts district,” otherwise known as “gentrification station.” There are still a few good things to see there, though. By the time you get here in July they may be pushed out and replaced with overpriced condos. Local restaurants are still good though. Try the Diamond for diner fare (and fried pickle chips), or Dish for southern Comfort Food. Midwood Smokehouse got famous during the ‘16 Presidential Campaign because of some big names visiting. There are also a few little artsy things scattered throughout the neighborhood.

NoDa has art galleries, restaurants, and a few small, independent concert venues . It’s the home of the Evening Muse , a great little venue, and Cabo Fish Taco , which probably won’t impress a Texan.

Another gentrified area, but still has a few decent things to do. There’s a Dave and Buster’s there. The 3 good concert venues there shut down.

Dilworth:

Not gentrified, because it’s old money. My sister’s the FOH manager and bartender at 300 East. It’s Southern Comfort food served bistro-style. Sunday brunch is great and there’s always a specialty French Toast on the menu. Lots of old churches and fun architecture there.

Myers Park:

Even older money. This is where the big money in Charlotte tends to live. The only art-house theater in Charlotte is here, the Manor .

Minor league baseball , Epicentre (which is lots of clubs, including Dale Jr’s country bar Whiskey River), Discovery Place , NASCAR hall of fame , the Mint Museum uptown and the Blumenthal Performing Arts center including the Belk Theater

We may hit Dilworth just on principle: it’s my wife’s maiden name. Thanks! Fantastic list. I appreciate it.

Anybody who doesn’t tell you to visit the U.S. National Whitewater Center is doing it wrong. I’m new to kinja, so I have no idea how to do a link but it’s an easy google. Tons of stuff to do including whitewater rafting, climbing walls, flat water kayaking and paddle boarding, ropes courses, zip lines, and a Biergarten.

That sounds good, especially with three teenage boys in tow. Thanks! And the historian in me loves your screen name. Cheers!
