Let’s meet another large Peugeot that didn’t do much outside France, or even in it.

Chateau non compris.

It’s a handsome car. What was wrong with it?

Prestige. Or the lack of it.

- A executive sedan that isn’t German in a continent and country that much prefers compacts

- It’s from France, and large, quasi-luxury French cars usually only sold well nationally

- It’s a flagship from the 1989, which means that it was full of ambitious electronics that were horribly unreliable in practice

- Massive and extensive recall (pretty much all the engine room wiring and the exhaust system was replaced) in the car’s early life killed it’s reputation

- It looked identical to the quite cheaper Peugeot 405. Brand identity is a pretty old concept

- The initial engine line-up was poor: the 4 cylinders, both petrol and diesel, were weak for the 605's size, and the V6 drank too much

- It competed with cars such as the Alfa Romeo 164, Lancia Thema, BMW E34, Mercedes W124, Saab 9000 and Audi A6

Large non-German cars don’t tend to do well. Buyers in that segment are extremely conservative. The car itself was fine. Not perfect, but fine.

Apart from the reliability issues it looked too much like the cheaper 405. The 607 that followed it and which I occasionally see was much chromier and differentiated from lower models. Still didn’t sell though and wasn’t directly replaced.
