Good find, is that post war testing or were we able to nab that during the war.

I finally got around to watching the film Battle of Britain in its entirety last week - had seen bits and pieces, and the last twenty minutes or so, but not the whole thing. The BF 109s in that film looked accurate to me except that they had a right-side-up V engine... odd. Turns out they are Spanish license-builds (real 109s!) that were fitted with Merlins. Uhm....
Something else that struck me during the film was that with a whole field of Heinkels and huge formation flights of various types, mostly real with little recourse to models, that the film is electrifying because it is nearly actual magic. What I mean, is, due to the attrition of the years, what is captured on film is next to totally impossible if filmed today - and it is that knowledge that what is seen is *now* impossible that makes it at times unreal and at others more than real. Magic.

Yep, inverted V was a very common configuration, especially for fighters.

Funny you should mention that. I am working on an article about the Bf 109, and was looking for some good photos and stumbled across this one. But then I noticed that something looked funny about it, and it turns out that they are the Spanish-built 109s from the movie.
They don’t nearly as sleek or as menacing as the originals.

Apparently Hobbycraft made a model a while back of the Spanish
Bochon
as painted for the movie.

Early Bf 109s (which this isn’t) also had a more squared-off wingtip, and all 109s have a differently positioned tailplane than the Zero. Fuselage is also a little longer/thinner.

Lower COG, easier field maintenance, and then you can thread a cannon between the cylinders and have it shoot through the propeller spinner.

This is a beautiful plane. I love how the top of the fuselage goes straight from the top of the cockpit.

Very much a product of a 1930s design ethos. Not the best for rearward visibility, though.

Thanks!! I didn’t know that - but it makes me kinda sad, because BA has been using a lot of 747-400's in and out of ORD, which I presume the A380 will displace. :(

Not enough Murica. From Romanian defector Cpt. Cantacuzino, he carried a high ranking POW back to Italy in the fuselage.

Yeah, I’ll be sad to see the 744s go. Qantas is starting to replace theirs with 787s. One the best airplane photos I’ve ever taken (IMHO) was this 744 in Dallas a few years ago.

Gorgeous photo!
I used to go to London 3-5x/year, but my job changed last summer, so that stopped. I always flew AA/BA back and forth, and usually tried to get on a BA 744 on the way over - business class, window seat, upper deck. That’s as good as airline travel gets, IMHO.
Kinda sad to see the 744 go, but also sad that I’m not traveling overseas anymore, because I haven’t taken a ride on the 380 yet.

Thanks. Sadly, I have never flown on a 747, and I may soon lose the chance forever. I’ve only been overseas twice, and both times on a 767. In coach.

Its a pretty incredible story, though it seems I was wrong about him being a defector as the flight took place after Romania became part of the allies? I just remembered the livery and the basics of the story from a Warthunder skin :p

Back when I was traveling all the time (most of the ‘90's, up until March 2001 when I switched jobs), I made it a point to ride on everything that United flew - despite being almost exclusively domestic travel.
My first ride on a 747 (probably a -200?) was from Dulles to O’Hare - the type of repositioning flight that was common back then, and very rare now.
Coincidentally, landing at ORD on 4R (in beautiful weather), we were within 10-15' of the runway when, ever so gradually, the engines started to spool up and I realized that we were climbing instead of descending. Took a slight left once the climb was established and flew directly over Terminal 5. So, my first 747 ride was also my first go around...

It’s funny how you become attuned to the sounds of an aircraft. For me, it’s not from lots of flying, but just being knowledgable about it to a certain degree. I flew out of Cincinnati once on a DC-10, the only time I’ve ever flown on one. I was in the center, over the wing, and we took off and I heard the gear come up. Then, I heard it go back down. Well, that’s not right. At that point, the captain came on the intercom and said that they had an indication of a problem with the gear, and that they were going to return to the airport. We ended up switching to different equipment, so my only DC-10 flight was also perhaps my shortest.

I need to find more details, and get the story in context, figure out the timeline. The anniversary of his death is later this month, so I’ll likely write something to coincide with that.

So how exactly was that plane procured? Was it stolen, forced to land, or did a defector use it to get diplomatic immunity?

I’ve always been pretty sensitive to sounds on board an aircraft, including gear, flaps, slats, etc. I love the deeper sound of engines on bigger aircraft - like the 747/777/787.
Least favorite noise? The ‘barking dogs in the cargo hold’ of the A320 family.

My favorite joke about that plane. This reddit version is different than the one I remember.
A World War II pilot is reminiscing before school children about his days in the air force.
“In 1942,” he says, “the situation was really tough. The Germans had a very strong air force. I remember, “ he continues, “one day I was protecting the bombers and suddenly, out of the clouds, these fokkers appeared.
(At this point, several of the children giggle.)
I looked up, and right above me was one of them. I aimed at him and shot him down. They were swarming. I immediately realized that there was another fokker behind me.”
At this instant the girls in the auditorium start to giggle and boys start to laugh. The teacher stands up and says, “I think I should point out that ‘Fokker’ was the name of the German-Dutch aircraft company”
“That’s true,” says the pilot, “but these fokkers were flying Messerschmidts.”
