‘Member when minivans only had those popout vent windows? And didn’t have climate control in the back? God save your soul if you were a child on a hot day in those terrible times.

when I was a kid (up to about 6th grade) my mom carted us around in a 1972 Plymouth Duster with a black vinyl interior and no A/C.
*sizzle*

My mom’s 2000 Grand Caravan had rear AC.
That was about it.
Oh, and those vent windows too.

Back in my day, instead of calling it”getting burned”, we called it “building character”.

I’ve got you beat. Grew up with a 1977 Kombi van - only the two front windows opened and no AC. My folks ended up having to put in an aftermarket pop-up sunroof in back to get some airflow.

Burgundy vinyl seats will get very hot in a car with clear windows. The front seats had some very period correct fabric seat covers but as a young boy wearing the short shorts of the early ‘80s your thighs felt like BBQ.

I can relate heavily, before our 2013 Odyssey we had Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth minivans o_O

I dunno, as a kid we had a 1993 Caravan SE short wheelbase which I still actually miss a lot, haha!
It only had the popout windows in the very back and non-functioning A/C, but I don’t remember ever being super uncomfortable from heat despite trips south into the warmer US every summer from here in Nova Scotia.

I would still gladly take that car anyway. :P

A lot of those early vans didn’t have any sort of tint either

Yup! But I think those A/C systems were a bit stronger to help compensate. R-12 for the win!
But yes, being hot in the back seat for 10+ minutes was just part of the penalty of riding in the back.

And did that car even have rear seat belts?
My moms 70 Nova coupe didn’t. She had that til I was in about 6th grade too. I think it had green fabric seats though, not vinyl?

lap belts only.

Until I was about 5 or 6, my mom had a white 63 Nova sedan with a red interior and no seat belts whatsoever. Then she got the green 70 coupe which had front lap belts, no rears. Got rid of that when I was about 12 or 13 when she took my dad’s hand me down Caprice wagon. That was a luxury car by comparison.

After some station wagons and horrible cars, my parents got a Astro van. It had the bottom pop out windows. 2 girls in the middle bench and us 2 boys in the 3rd row.

And you are stronger now because of it.

We have a 2003 Odyssey, and the rear vent windows only work intermittently at best. My kids have seen those big lowering side windows, and they are jealous. If we had them though, they would only spend the entire drive messing with them and throwing shit out the window.

1984 Oldsmobile custom cruiser wagon with the rear facing 3rd row. Sure the window rolled down in the tailgate, but dad ordered it special with the Diesel engine. All those sweet Diesel fumes just wafted in at every stop light

To this day I swear those windows didn’t do a damn thing. Except chatter if you didn’t have them opened properly...

They only create any airflow if the front windows are open.

I remember in middle school some friends had a Nissan Quest and my young kind was blown when the door windows rolled down. At that point my experience was limited to an early 90s Plymouth Voyager and a mid-90s Econoline conversion van.

When I was a little kid, our 91 Mazda MPV had those pop-out windows, but with rear A/C. By 97 we have moved onto a Ford Explorer, fortunately also with rear A/C.

Well, at least it wouldn’t have done that for too many years. GM 1980s diesel reliability and all...

We lived in Maine it rusted out before it stopped running, he got 4 years and 80,000 miles out of it. He really took care of it to get it to live that long.

I grew up in a station wagon family. Thank god.

My Previa had the pop-outs which were pretty much useless. It did have separate rear climate control and vents though.

1984 Suburban with a 6.2 diesel, 3 rows of seats, no window tint, and rear heat only. I was the youngest kid, so I got the third row. It had barn doors, so you couldn’t even roll down the carbon monoxide window.
