Got a couple things I’d like to eventually install on the Killer Queen . The first is a dual channel dash camera, with a long-lasting auxiliary battery that doesn’t draw power from the car battery (so I can have the car protected while it is parked).
What would you guys recommend for the battery set-up, and how to set up the wiring routing and such? I mean, I know I can use the fusebox to supply power, but very unfamiliar with that.
The other thing....fog lamps. I want to mount low profile fog lamps on the underside of my pushbars at either side of the license plate. How would I go about getting it mounted and then wiring it?

For the auxiliary battery, I would recommend you get something called a voltage sensitive relay. This is a pretty foolproof way to make sure both batteries maintain a charge from the alternator. Here’s a great write-up of the steps needed for the whole process.
As for fog lights, mounting to the push bar is probably your best bet. There are a few ways to do this, but they all will involve drilling holes. Ideally, you will want to run the wires close to where the bar mounts to the car, so you can thread them through into the engine bay without having them be obvious. Also, have you considered a small LED light bar that runs along the bottom of the center portion of the pushbar?

I was thinking about that LED light bar, but I don’t want it to look like bro-lights. I want them to look a little more like rectangular (with rounded corners) old-school fog lights. Probably with a yellow tint and snap-on covers.
I’m a sucker for old-fashioned stuff. And yes, I did say in the original post that I’d be mounting them under the horizontal bar (the flat surface), on both sides of the license plate.

I already set up this camera in my new e-Golfs. Right now I only have them hooked up to an external battery because I don’t know which fuse does what; I have to get the fuse diagram from VW.
But once I figure out which fuse to use I just use a fuse tap , but that fuse tap will actually power this 12v to 5v charger .
So dash camera just gets plugged into the external battery , which in turn is charged anytime you start the car and there is power to the fuse.

Is your car a P71? You’ve got aux power inputs under the glove box.
I believe that all Vic’s have a constant hot 12v to the cig lighter, so I’d just tap into that. Your dash cam probably doesn’t pull enough to kill the battery unless it sits overnight. As for the fogs, just wire them straight to the battery.

That’s the thing, I want to have a way for the system to switch to the auxiliary battery so the car battery doesn’t die overnight. :P The point is to have the cameras be on 24/7 so it guarantees that it captures any potential vandalism or damage to my car.
Plus, by having the camera run off of the aux battery instead of the 12v power supply, I eliminate the potential for electrical noise being introduced to the recording system.
My auto club president had his P71 vandalized by some jackass in a Dodge Ram when he decided to leave the car at the bar since he was too drunk to drive.

Interesting. I’ll have to look into that.
