Kinja'd!!!

My F-150 failed inspection today because it has “bad” upper and lower ball joints. I looked and they seem fine to me, but whatev. Soon will be the adventure of a lifetime - tearing apart a fifteen year old suspension for my first time. Kind words requested.

Buy or borrow a set of ball joint separators, life will be easier this way.

My ball joints are riveted on. Hopefully yours aren’t.

I have done this on a couple of old trucks and cars. My advice is lots of PB Blaster and a ton of swearing. I would also get an impact wrench of some sort, preferably air powered. If you don’t have a big compressor, get a plug in model. This will make things much easier. Like there is no way I would tackle another rusty old suspension without an impact wrench type of easier.

My only other advice is try to match the lengths of the new tie rods to the old so things stay close to aligned, torque to spec, grease what gets grease and get an alignment real soon after.

The upper one is one piece with the control arm, so I just gotta replace the whole thing. Lower one just presses in.

You will likely need a press then. May look into getting new lower arms too. It’s easier anyway since they will already be out.

If your new parts aren’t the sealed type and have grease fittings, take this opportunity to spend a few extra bucks and get yourself some angled grease fittings. Install some 90°s or 45°s wherever it’ll make future maintenance easier.

I agree with dogisbadob. I recently had Moog tie rod ends fail within a year on my toyota. I would only use OEM
