Can’t get thrown from the car if you aren’t really in it in the first place

I mean I think so as well but it’ll be no less fatal in an accident.

Well at least you can take some solace in your windshield, kinda.

Is it though? A chassis from a notoriously unsafe truck under no cage at all. Ratrods are cool, but they aren’t even remotely safe.

That story was a tough read. Especially since he has a young family.

And of course the comment section is a mixture of reasonable analysis and ignorant bile.

I know if I’m in a high speed collision in my CJ, my seat will tear itself out of the tub and I’ll be strangled to death by the 3-point belt on my rollbar.

It wasn’t the welds that put him in front of that Pontiac.

Yeah, but here’s the thing, you probably won’t ever drive it above 40 mph or try to do something dangerous in it. Because that’s not the point of the car. Sure if somebody else hits you, but even crossing the street is dangerous whether you use a crosswalk or not.

I’d feel much better riding in your vehicle than his based on his comments. Your’s sits on a frame built to be it’s own rigid unit, he hacked up a unibody vehicle and half-ass welded everything. The fact that he can’t even get a good looking weld tells me his welds were probably far from good. Welding takes a lot of skill and any number of things will cause a very poor weld, I know how to weld a bit but I would never touch anything structural unless I had years and years of experience and training. And this doesn’t even touch on the fact that most likely he had no proper design for the cage and just eye-balled it.

I’m not convinced it’d be safer in my truck. I think once it is road worthy I’ll bring it to a cage builder and see if they can do anything for me.

This was from the linked article in the FP post.

Dillard was heading north on Eden Way toward Volvo Parkway when he crashed, said Officer Leo Kosinski, a Chesapeake police spokesman. A Pontiac was traveling the opposite direction, and Dillard lost control and started making a left hand turn, sliding into the other lane and oncoming traffic. The Pontiac couldn’t stop in time and hit Dillard on the passenger rear tire side and spun it out. Dillard was ejected, Kosinski said.

I went through a bit of it, and there are some reasonable comments discussing the welds, tubing used, etc. - not being at all knowledgable on that, I found it useful (you probably would not).

Then there’s the usual ‘he deservs to dye wat an idiet’ crap that is just disgusting...

Rat rods, muscle cars, vintage cars, etc are all less safe than modern stuff.

Self awareness is the key though. Like knowing your limitations during the build and keeping safety in mind. Or not being a maniac behind the wheel.

Safety gear needs to be installed with care. That’s not to say it’s necessarily hard- but you can’t skip steps and say “good enough”.

Possibly not, but the chassis is at least designed function properly as is. His definitely wasn’t, maybe that factored into the crash, maybe not.
