Specifically from these guys here: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

My time is up on keeping the winter tires on my car, which are currently mounted on the stock rims. Last year my all seasons ripped when they took them off the rims, which is understandable since they were 5 years old. My winter tires only have two seasons on them.

I’d rather just get a new set of wheels/tires to avoid having the tires peeled off every spring. I’ve been looking at Craigslist seeing VW/Audi rims in the $4-500 range, usually with some curb rash or other defect. So I’ve been looking at other options and was thinking some R8 replica wheels like the ones below might look good.

My concern is quality and safety. I know they wont be super light, but for $473 for a set shipped, can I go wrong?

If you’re just using to daily drive and don’t live on potholed streets, they’ll most likely be fine. Reps tend to not be able to take the abuse of track/autocross or really rough streets. Lots of folks with reps are a little more likely to get bent or cracked rims if roads are less than optimal.

Another potential thing to remember is replica wheels don’t bend. They shatter. So potholes may bend and deform legit wheels but those same potholes may snap the spikes from the main rim.

I’ve been on cheap rims for over 3 years, none from that company but cast wheels from Drag, Adr, and esr.

Drags never cracked, two of them bent pretty good from potholes. The adrs cracked on the lip, and the esrs have had no issue.

Oem vehicles come with cast wheels all the time.

People will say they can’t withstand a trackday and they may be right but there have been cases of quality brands failing in the track environments too so I wouldn’t let that worry you.

I’d say do it but keep your diameter 18 or lower to help with potholes, it would be no fun bend a brand new rim.

Well why spend $473 for those wheels when you can get used steel wheels from the auto recycler for 1/4 of the cost... AND get some dry rotted tires already installed on the wheels for free!!

True, plenty of OEM rims are cast, and plenty fail on rough streets. I don’t think I would go bigger than 18" anyway just because we road trip in this car, and I want to be comfortable.

Replica should be fine but no way would I pay that much. I don’t know where you are, but a Craigslist search here turns up a bunch of complete OEM sets for under that that are pretty much brand new.
