So, our ‘90 Mini still doesn’t run like I would like. I’ve changed plugs and wires, cleaned out the carb and adjusted the valves. It runs fine at idle and above 3800 rpm. It has an aftermarket Weber carb on it and I think it is just too much for the 998cc engine. Any thoughts? Anything else I should look at?

Get a gunsons colour tune, a box of different size jets, and get the combustion flame colour just right.
No excessive smoke from exhaust?

do you still have the regular carb? coz if you do you could swap it back and if it runs right then.. you know what your problem is

That Weber might be too much for that 998. Can you jet it down?
What do the plugs look like?

Yeah I’m going to join the chorus and say if it’s running fine at idle and over 3800 it has to be a carb issue

What kind of CFM does the Weber flow? I’d guess your needs are probably actually as low as 100-125 CFM. Much higher and you have more carb than the motor can handle.

Anywhere between 400-440 cfm depending on choke. So, yeah.

A 390 is good for a 2.7L Corvair.
