So, the dentist took a torque wrench to my face.

And now it hurts. Safety image for the squeamish.

For those not in the know, I broke a tooth in half and they decided the best course of action was an implant. Last year, they removed the old tooth, and built up the socket with transplanted bone. A few months later, they drilled out a hole and installed what is basically a helicoil with a small screw in it.

This morning, they opened things up again, removed the screw, then installed the permanent post. This is where they had to use the torque wrench. Now that the post is torqued to spec, we have to wait a few more weeks for the gums to heal and then I’ll get a new tooth!

The doc was great, cracking jokes about being more like a mechanic than a dentist. I’m sure the check I left with him will be taking care of several boat payments. It’s no wonder he’s so happy.

Soooo how many inch-pounds or force is needed to torque down a tooth stud?

Also sure hope they can’t be mistakenly switched from inch to foot-lbs.

Somewhere between 10 - 35 Ncm, depending on the implant manufacturer.

Never a good sign when the dentist gets out mechanics tools.

Now do that across you top front 4 teeth, add a bridge, do a couple root canals, spend ten years visiting the dentist weekly starting at 7 years old..

Kinja'd!!!

Or maybe don’t try to turn your new bike around on the sidewalk...

Your call.

Yeouch. Our friend’s kid took a line drive in the mouth at about 10 years old. He’s looking forward to getting old enough to have permanent teeth installed. My own journey started with a broken tooth which required a root canal and a crown. That c rown came loose and broke the tooth I’m having replaced.

Hopefully he wasn’t like the idiot tire centers in my area who set their air wrenches to 100 lbs aluminum wheels or no and then have the Audacity to put a 90 lbs torque wrench on it and tell me, “yep it’s at 90 for ya sir”.

Yep, crashed at 8, and had three crowns and a flipper until I turned 18 and they could do a bridge. It sucked.

On the plus side it made annual dentist visits pretty easy - anything they can do in an hour isn’t going to bother me much.

I am pretty squeemish about the kids- the first thing I teach them on any bikes/boards/skiis is to keep you hands up.

Couple ugga duggas is what it’s torqued to.
