Love it - price seems a bit high, but if you want a W124 manual in North America, shopping around isn’t much of an option.

Nice SEC nose, that was really a thing in the late 80s. Romanian plate makes me a little leery - I wonder where it comes from. A VIN might tell us. Steering wheel isn’t my thing, and the wheels are an anachronism for the age of the car, but it looks good with those skirts.

Believe it or not, there were North America-spec 5-speed 260E and 300E, I have seen a few.

Looking at the license plate bolts on the trunk, I’m going to say euro. They are too far apart for a North American style plate.

Picked up a w124 wagon a couple weeks back, the flywheel I need for a manual swap is gonna cost me more than the whole car

Oh yeah, it’s not a NA car, I was thinking about its origin - I strongly doubt it was sold in Romania when new.

Hi, I’m an engineering student enrolled at Oconomowoc High School. I’m currently working in the PLTW capstone course, EDD (Engineering Design & Development).

At this point in our project we need to find people who are either experts or experienced in our project’s relative fields. Our project is centered on designing a fully functional universal cup holder that has the highest potential for eliminating spills within automobiles. Even if you aren’t employed or currently working with cars, your input is valuable and will help us with our justification.

If you don’t mind my asking, what are your thoughts and do you agree with some of these statements?

Some cup holders are too shallow for proper functioning.

Some cup holders have poor placement. (Too close to electronics or get in the way.)

Some cup holders are made of poor materials and have fragile designs.

Some cup holders can’t hold enough varying container sizes.

Some cup holders hardly work at all.

Any input regarding automobile cup holders and their flaws or strengths is greatly helpful. My partner and I would also appreciate knowing what your profession is or how you’ve come to be interested in automobiles.

Thanks for your time.

First thought - ‘Jeez, a manual W126?’

Too much money. Manual 260E’s can be found here already. Pick up a steering wheel and some new wheels, you’re most of the way to that car. Personally I think the SEC nose looks pretty bad on that car. I’d rather put that 7k towards a 500E with a high interest 160 month loan than throw it at a base model import that might be hard to find certain parts for.

No, Romania was communist back then. Germany would be the best bet I guess, although it could’ve come from every western European country.

The wheels, front end and Romanian connection make me somewhat cautious though. I would at the very least not trust the kms. Could easily be double or even triple that. Not that it matters on a car like this at this age (condition is all that matters), but still.

When spending that much cash on a w124 I’d have it inspected by a specialist before purchase.

Agreed about your skepticism, but base model? The 6 in there makes it by definition far from a base model. It’s above the 200, 200E and 230E. And the 200D and 250D as well I guess. There’s leather and power windows too. Compared to a friend’s 1986 W124 200D this is much better equipped. That had a 4 speed manual, manual windows, (great) cloth seats, 2 zone heater/blower without AC and power passenger side/manual driver side mirror.

Do you have a part number? Could probably get it in Germany for little money.

Yes, I was kind of joking - unless it was owned by a lucky apparatchik type, it didn’t go to Romania when new, but could have been sauntering around the wild east for the past 20 years doing who knows what. I’ve heard to be a little leery of cars from some areas.

Used car prices are so high here that this one doesn’t look too crazy, but a PPI is a good idea on any old MB.

Manual W126s were a thing, all 6cyl cars, made for the life of the platform. The first few years of W140 could be ordered with a manual too (also all 6cyl). Neither possible when new in NA, of course.

SEC hood/nose conversions were a trendy thing for a time in the mid-late 80s, I think. That combined with the skirts definitely makes this car look the part.

I talked to a guy in north van who dailys a manual W126. Euro 280SE, 4 speed. He was pretty surprised that the car got any attention, most people think it’s just some old car I guess, especially in north van

From the outside, it looks like a normal 300SD, that’s probably part of it. It may have cloth though, which would also make it odd.

Later cars could be had with a 5-speed, which I suspect is better - they get wound up a bit at speed.

I imagine so, I only took notice because it did have cloth, as well as euro lights and the slim bumpers.

Yeah a 4 speed doesn’t seem very autobahn friendly

The lights really stand out. At least they don’t have US spec bumpers of a 116 or 107.

I had a W126 300SE, 4 speed auto, 70mph would be around 3500 rpm. Not hard on the engine per se, but not good for economy - the I6 barely beats the V8 in overall mpg as it works harder.
