"Bman76 (hates WS6 hoods, is on his phone and has 4 burners now)" (bman76-4)

Apparently the Polestar 1 is going to start at $155,000, which seems straight up crack pipe to me...
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I can build a heavily optioned RS5 for $85k, which is what I’d consider this a competitor to.
I like the car, but I can’t see a $155k Volvo GT car catching on...

Tesla Model S competitor? If you spec one of those out you’re close to this thing.

I love you Volvo, but you don’t have a good enough pedigree in performance cars OR luxury cars to be selling something at that price
sm70- why not Duesenberg?

The “Volvo” is a) going to be bigger and a luxury car, and b) have 150 more horsepower. It competes with the S63 AMG Coupe, not the RS5.

The Volvo also has 150 more hp and 296 (!) lb/ft more torque and I’d argue it looks much better, probably has a nicer interior, and it’s far more exclusive. I’d say the Volvo is more of a Mercedes S-Class Coupe (or even used Bentley Continental GT) competitor.

Fail. How about building relatively nice, unique cars, slotted in between Fords and BMW’s? The place where Saab and Volvo used to live.

Why should they settle and be slotted between other manufacturers? This isn’t a Volvo, it’s a Polestar.

Who does then? Tesla? Did they have the pedigree to show up and start selling $100k sedans?

I agree with others that it doesn’t really compete with the RS5/S5/A5 market, it’s more of a competitor to the S Class Coupe or upcoming 8 Series(?), but that’s not the problem. The problem is that most people are going to see this as just a Volvo for a while, and buyers in this market are definitely not going to think about Volvo when they’re ready for their next “look at me” fancy coupe.
Polestar needs to establish itself higher on the ladder than Volvo first, competing in the $80K to $95K areas, then release a $150K car after a couple years.

Here’s my take after some thought.
In power and luxury, I can believe it actually competes with more expensive cars than the RS5 as others have stated. The thing is though, if you want to go upmarket you have to just push.
Volvo certainly
doesn’t
have the pedigree and history for a car of this level, but the only way to get there is to start. I doubt they expect this car to be a major commercial success, but more-so see it as development into that market.
They will definitely find niche buyers who will take it, and they are likely hoping that once reviewers get their hands on it, they can see the quality and performance for the price without thinking “It’s just a Volvo.”
If I had that kind of money and was in the market for something in this segment, would I buy it? Absolutely not, but I think I can see what they’re trying to do.

Sit back and think about this: It’s a 4-cylinder. No one in their right mind should buy one of these over an S63.

It’s a 2.0 4 cylinder hybrid. I don’t care how much power they can squeeze out of it, it’s still a 2.0 4 cylinder.

I think of the world of Teslas beating everything, cylinder count doesn’t matter much. Still makes 600hp. Also Volvo wants you to lease it and their not trying to sell that many.

That’s different. 2.0 4 cylinders are dull, electricity is at least refined and smooth.
sm70- why not Duesenberg?

It looks better than the S63 by a good deal, and I like the futuristic hybrid stuff. Plus with this, you look a little less douchey and more sophisticated than you do in an S63. I love the S63, but I’d certainly have to consider both. This thing looks pretty effing cool. And yes, it’s a 4 cylinder, but it’s a 600 horsepower hybrid 4 cylinder and it’s got 70 ft/lb of torque more than the Benz. You might not want one, but a person wouldn’t be nutzo for choosing one.

Volvo might be in the situation where their customers have more money to spend than they can charge for their current models.
