Oppo- I recently found a pretty mint 1990 Jeep Comanche that quickly became mine. The Jeep is mostly rust free, and more importantly, the underneath is almost perfect. I’d like to get it undercoated , but was wondering if this is an easier DIY job(no lift, limited garage space)or pay someone. Pic below of it getting it’s new exhaust installed and another of the undercarriage.

wow, as a Canadian I think i can honestly say I never saw one of these without rust, even when new.

POR15, roll it on, you can do it on the ground as well.
Basically if the jeep rusts underneath that you will be able to last forever, I know a guy who used it on a tracker and he did it post cancer and the thing was made entirely of POR15, and still is running and driving perfect as he needs it.

Having someone else do it like Ziebart’s is going to cost ~$500 (at least that’s what I was quoted last year) and is the easiest route.
The DIY method I’ve heard of a few people doing is using POR-15 to coat everything underneath. It’s a bit of a messy job though from what I hear.

I wrote something about undercoatings a few months ago:
https://oppositelock.kinja.com/rust-proofing-1821186422
Essentially, if you’re willing to DIY and buy a few cans of Krown or Fluid Film and pull some components, you can do a very thorough coating that could very well be better than what most shops would do. You’d have to take care and pay attention to what you’re doing. Be sure to get those key areas where most vehicles rust out.

As good as POR-15 is for a lot of things, I seem to recall it’s not UV-stable, so you’d kind of need to topcoat it with something.

I don’t have anything useful to add here but that is a gorgeous truck. I didn’t even know they made toppers for them.

Man that is clean! Doesn’t look like it’s ever been a winter vehicle.

Thanks! I got it from the original owner, has 124k miles and runs extremely well. It passed inspection no problem but did just find a leaky headliner (which is common). I know it’s always been garage kept.

I don’t think there’s enough rust for him, hahaha. But I’d definitely sell it for the right price.

Yeah, I had to spend more than I wanted, but that also got me no literally no rust repair.

Thank you! I found it in the right place at the right time and had to get it. And the topper won’t be on it much, but will definitely be nice for camping trips.

Thanks for the link! I really don’t want to do the prep, but I also want it done right.

My concerns with paying someone is getting a half assed job. There’s a place near me that does so that I may fall and get a quote. I mostly don’t want to clean/sand it

I assume it’s rusted out between the time you took a picture of it and made this post? I jest, I jest.
The underside looks great.
I’ve done a half-ass job with fluid film before. Seems to work pretty well, but it’s not a “set it and forget it” undercoating. You need to re-apply yearly. YMMV.

You are correct on not being UV stable.

It is raining today........
And i dont mind doing it yearly, but was hoping people had experiences paying for it to push me one way or another.

I’ve heard it does pretty well on the underside of Jeeps since they aren’t too exposed. That’s what I’m going to be doing soon myself. Anywhere exposed they offer a specialty top coating.

I didn’t know that, but maybe being on the underside the exposure is low enough that it doesn’t affect it too much

When I talked to this place it sounded like they do a pretty thorough job even removing fenders to get good coverage, but ymmv

Wow! That thing is clean!
I have no undercoating experience to offer.

Is undercoating a good idea? I’ve heard that doing so can actually promote rust.
