but first, this, as seem on my way to work:

Kinja'd!!!

the other day after the kids got off the school bus, one girl opened the door to her car and the german sheppard jumped out and went straight to the neighbors daughter (6 y/o) Shes fine but got a cut on the top of her head and her cheek, meaning she was looking into the dogs mouth for a few seconds. She freaked out, mom freaked out, everybody pretty much freaked out. Dad comes down to the bus stop and freaked the fuck out. The cops are called. Dad says I may have been a bit excessive, the cop says you didn’t hit anyone so you did fine.

Animal control says the dog gets one bad. With these peoples unfenced back yard being adjacent to my backyard, i’m not too happy about that.

Sounds like one of my neighbors. It doesn’t help that the dog in question is a pit bull. Damn thing got loose and bit my daughter several years ago. Fortunately, it was being playful, not aggressive. I made it absolutely clear that if the dog got loose again and bit someone, the dog would die and the neighbor would find himself on the losing end of a lawsuit. The next time it got loose, he showed more than a little hustle trying to catch it before it got too close to the neighborhood kids.

I love dogs, but if a dog bit my kid’s face like that I’d probably put it down in the middle of the street.

As a pitbull owner, it’s totally unacceptable for a pit to ever get mouthy, even when playing. My pits would never even play with kids. As soon as kids would grab a toy from them they drop it and walk away.

Every dog should be trained this way.

fuck you and the breed shaming. Pits are great dogs! really great with kids too. That being said if a dog is poorly trained blame the owner, not the breed. but mostly fuck you and people like you with your ignorant breed shaming.

I’m calling animal control if i even see it outside without a lease. I’m not taking any chance.

Easy there, killer. My point was the perception. Having a pit bull running loose and biting my daughter doesn’t help the breed. It was fortunate that I’m a dog owner and recognized the behavior for what it was. Several of my neighbors were prepared to call animal control and have the dog put down.

I didn’t realize that leases were required to let dogs outside. Do they have to carry the paperwork with them or does your community issue stickers?

:)

True. With pits it’s actually much easier as they’ve traditionally been bred to not want to bite people (so owners could fight them). However, people started breeding them with mastiffs which were bred to attack people. You also get shitheads who train their pits to be guard dogs. They look scary enough that even the sweetest dog will scare intruders away, so it makes no sense to make them aggressive.

i dont think he was shaming the breed, just explaining what the breed was that bit his kid. he cant change that fact. and frankly any breed that bites my kid is getting put down, regardless of if it was a pit or a corgi

We’ve always worked hard to make sure our dogs have soft mouths so that even if they put them on someone, they won’t bite down. I’ve had dogs all my life, yet I’ve never had one bite somebody. Why anyone would put up with a biting dog is beyond me.

Yeah no. No pitbulls, no chows, no dog breeds specifically engineered to kill things. The great thing about dogs is that there is a shitton of breeds.

i’m not 100% on what the outcome of that specific issue was or what the rules are in general. I do know that the dog is no longer allowed at the bus stop and it had a 10 day quarantine (i dunno what that is supposed to do) Its a large dog so it probably does need exercise and a place to poop

Awful. And it could have gone much worse. If the kid would have had a chance to run, that shepherd would have only been even more aggressive. Getting our dog not to play bite with others was a huge part of our training for fear of incidents like this.

No, that’s absolutely correct. And I say that as a dog owner. There’s some jackass who used to walk her dog without a leash, and it’d come running up to me and mine. “Don’t worry, he’s friendly”. Yeah, how do you know mine is? Because when I had my infant in a stroller, bet your ass my dog is not allowing a strange uncontrolled animal to approach. There’s a neighbor who’s afraid of dogs. You gonna let your dog run up to him? Dogs off leash get animal control called. Because some jackass who thinks they’re the exception isn’t listening to you or me.

Yeah, that’s the shitty thing. My dog, a lab, used to play with a doberman at the dog park. They’d wrestle and get mouthy, like dogs do. Every now and then someone would be alarmed for the safety of my dog, who is 100lbs. Nobody ever worried about the doberman. Breed biases are real and shitty.

Silly OPPOsaurus, go get yourself another cup of coffee! You wrote “lease” when you meant “leash” and I was poking fun.

Exactly. The statistics show that Labs bite more than any other dog. Since I’ve owned both a Lab and a Golden/Lab/Chow(?) mix, both fairly large dogs, I’ve always been extra vigilant because of the risk.

When I took my first Lab to puppy class, the instructor was a breeder of Staffordshire terriers (pit bulls) and used a couple of very sweet Staffys to teach the class . Even so, he was clear that he put down several pups a year because of aggressive tendencies. He taught the class partly to be an emissary for the breed and show that they could be great dogs.

No play biting is a critical lesson. I was thrilled last week when a visiting two-year-old was smacking my dog on the head and my dog was unresponsive - and later, the child pulled on my dog’s tail, and my dog just looked at me with a “Why do I have to endure this?” look. I was so happy and thankful for the training that we did when he was a puppy, both regarding biting, and early exposure to toddlers (while being rewarded for being patient).

I’ve been the person at the other end of this, and it sucks. My German Shepherd got out, and attacked a neighbors small dog that was on the sidewalk in front of our house (being walked by it’s owner). Thank god he didn’t kill it, but it had to have a lot of stitches. My dog would never bite a person, but he hates small dogs for some reason. And only when they are on his turf. He gets along with all dogs at the dog park. It’s no fun being the guy with the “killer dog/dangerous breed”in the neighborhood.

My staffie mix is kind of like that. Gets along great with dogs at the dog park and daycare, but if she sees a dog when we’re walking she goes nuts. When I first got her it was more like she just wanted their attention because they’d sniff and then she’d chill out. Now she doesn’t bark as much but the last couple of dogs we tried that with she lunged at. I think it’s some sort of protective thing with me and it being somewhere that’s “her” turf.

She’s totally afraid of little dogs though.

I like dogs as much as most people but after my grandma getting bit and my mom chased by a neighbors dog i have no sympathy for dogs that go crazy like that. They need to be trained.

Its a good thing i was not with them either time cause the dog would have a few 9mm holes in it. In the end its still an animal not a human.
