That Bossier City, Louisiana is home to Barksdale Air Force base. I was lucky enough to see one of these big, beautiful monsters taking off.

Kinja'd!!!

I was surprised to see just how many B-52s are there. I counted 34 of them in Google Earth.

Kinja'd!!!

Wow.

Here’s where they used to hang out.

Kinja'd!!!

I grew up in the 80s when they used to have readiness alert drills on a fairly regular basis. Whenever we lived on base, dad would take me down to the end of the flight line (when an alert was scheduled at a decent time) and we’d watch the MITO. I can’t remember how many they were, but it seemed to take off every 20 seconds or so.

Pretty awesome stuff.

I know the video is from 15 years earlier, but cold war is cold war.

Neat! The nearest base to us was Tinker AFB. I had a few opportunities to be on base with the Civilian Air Patrol. During one visit, we got really lucky and were able to watch a C-130 performing a JATO takeoff. Wow, that was loud.

During Desert Storm, Buffs from Barksdale flew all the way to Iraq to and back, a 35-hour mission.

Wow. I didn’t know that. Did they require refueling?

Multiple times. Shreveport to Baghdad, one way, nonstop, assuming they went this way (who knows how they really went?) is 6,200 nm. That’s 7,134 in new money. According to Wiki, the Buff’s combat radius is 4,480 nm, give or take considering winds, bomb load, and stops at Buc-ee’s along the way for beef jerky and soda pop.

We both know that you don’t get soda pop at Buc- ee’s. You get Coke. What flavor you pick is up to you.

Their beef jerky is ok, but I’ve discovered that they make some fantastic pecan pralines . Expensive, but worth every penny.

I’m not much for sweets, and I only stop at Buc-ee’s for the gallon of hot coffee. Oh, and the 200 toilets. I think the brilliance of Buc-ee’s is that somebody has figured out how to make a convenience store into a destination. We stop just for the hell of it on our way to Dallas. And then we stop again in West for the kolaches.

You’d be right on that. That’s LeMay discipline in action for you.
