I F$*%KING HATE OLD CARS

...

Bolts, that were factory lock tighted, rusted, and neglected which required an impact gun to remove, decided to come out just fine. Then, going back in with a fresh, clean bolt lubricated with anti-seize, DECIDE NOW TO SNAP.

WHAT

I’m done. Fuck this car. I’m going to put in all this work just for some stupid thing to happen to it.

I just wanted one fun car, and I am left with two piles of shit. how did that happen

THREE FUCKING YEARS

I hear you.

You think it’ll be a fun project, but it’s no fun if there’s always “something” preventing you from enjoying it.

My next fun car will be new, too.

Some things are easy, some are hard, for no good reason. When I rebuilt the front end of the Cougar, it was nearly a walk in the park, except for some incorrect parts being sent to me. Relatively small crap, like removing the headlight door actuators, took a week of soaking in PB Blaster, broken screwdrivers as pry bars, and a convoluted daisy chain of vise grips to put some rotational force on a screwdriver to pry that sucker out. One bolt, one week. The car is still not back together, as I’m mad at it.

Next up is the battery tray, which is a corroded mess. I’ve been soaking those bolts all week, but I expect at least one to break.

Everything has been unnecessarily hard. everything.

I swear, the only really fun projects are the ones in my head. Sometimes even the simplest things, in theory anyway, turn out to be the most frusrating clusterfucks in-the-world. I’d start detailing specific experiences, but we would be here all night.

If it were easy, everyone could do it.

I was spoiled with the front suspension being relatively easy, being soaked in engine oil for however long. Everything else has been a fight, and every new project has resulted in at least 1 broken bolt. Now that I remember correctly, I broke the cam bolt on the lower control arm, too.

Le sigh... old car problems indeed. Walk away. Have a beer. Watch some TV. Take a bath. AND THEN LIGHT THE CAR ON FIRE!

I feel your pain. I have a clean, straight El Camino with a crate motor that has decided that it wants to foul the #1 spark plug with oil. So after the front end rebuild, rear end refresh, new seats, upgraded electrical, and various other bits and bobs I am looking at an intake gasket and possibly new valve covers. If its not that then it will need new valve seals or rings. All I really want to do is drive the fucking thing.

Keep at it. When it’s done you’ll be satisfied. Or you’ll sell it and move on.

I won’t sell it when I’m done, but I think I’ll be terrified that something will happen to it.

Welcome to cars in general. Trust me, it’s not just an old car thing.

I have never had a single problem with any of the fasteners on my mini, barring one brake caliper bolt that I didn’t torque enough.
