Hey sm70, it’s me again. If you’re willing, do you have an email account I could use to contact you about the academic project I mentioned to you earlier? If not, would I be able to ask a few questions in the comments again?

Thanks.

I’m on here frequently enough that I can respond pretty quickly. Go ahead and drop your questions here.

Well, here’s my general prompt:

Hi, I’m an engineering student enrolled at Oconomowoc High School. I’m currently working in the PLTW capstone course, EDD (Engineering Design & Development).

At this point in our project we need to find people who are either experts or experienced in our project’s relative fields. Our project is centered on designing a fully functional universal cup holder that has the highest potential for eliminating spills within automobiles. Even if you aren’t employed or currently working with cars, your input is valuable and will help us with our justification.

If you don’t mind my asking, what are your thoughts and do you agree with some of these statements?

Some cup holders are too shallow for proper functioning.

Some cup holders have poor placement. (Too close to electronics or get in the way.)

Some cup holders are made of poor materials and have fragile designs.

Some cup holders can’t hold enough varying container sizes.

Some cup holders hardly work at all.

Any input regarding automobile cup holders and their flaws or strengths is greatly helpful. My partner and I would also appreciate knowing what your profession is or how you’ve come to be interested in automobiles.

Thanks.

All of the above statements are true. I can’t think of good examples for too shallow cup holders, but my Audi was a great example of putting them too close to the electronics. For 3, see the folding cup holders in many Saab’s and share me BMWs. May European cars also place the cup holders so that any drink in them blocks the air vents, which could not only reduce airflow but potentially have an undesirable effect on drink temps. Also, lots of big pickups and SUVs have cup holders so huge that anything smaller than a big gulp will fall over.

Something like the design in the Mercedes G-Class is almost laughably simple, but also works extremely well.

I’ve sort of always been interested in cars, it’s been a hobby and a passion of mine forever. Although I don’t work with cars in a professional capacity, I am one of the organizers for the Cars & Coffee spin-off for my area, if that matters. Hope that helps!

Thanks for all the input, all of what you said helps a lot. What year is the Mercedes you’re referencing?

Thanks!

The 463 G-Class (1990-2018) uses these little things that look like a trashcan basketball net, but they work quite well.
