This was taken today. Along with the rest of the northeastern US, we’ve been having a cold, snowy April. We haven’t had a single nice, warm spring skiing day, until today. Yet it snowed a fair amount this past week up in the mountains.

This meant that our mountain of choice for today, Wildcat, was 100% open - even the trails with no snowmaking, which were showing very few bare spots. The snow was soft and spring-like, but it wasn’t so warm that I couldn’t wear a jacket. It was perfect. And holy view - Mount Washington looked amazing today.

What a great end to the season, drinking beer in a t-shirt at the base, looking across the valley at this. And actually, if we want to ski there again, they’re going to be open two more weekends. Because why not?

I learned to ski at wildcat and I can’t remember the name but it had a ski mobile to ride up the mountain and it was cold doing it

I once visited Mount Washington with my mother. We didn’t go all the way up to the peak... couldn’t afford a trip up in one of the tracked vans.

The skimobile thingy was at Cranmore. And yeah, Cranmore has the distinction of being both low in elevation AND somehow colder than other mountains for no reason.

I hiked it last fall, and have done so a few times over the years. I’ve also hiked and skied Tuckerman Ravine, which you can see in that picture is perfectly blocked by a tree. But it’s pretty epic eastern backcountry skiing.

The rides to the top are ALL expensive, from the train to the vans. We took the train down once when I was probably 12 years old. The weather was awful as it tends to be, and my parents decided it was the best way down. Good call.
