After spending a week up in Albuquerque for family reasons I headed back down to Las Cruces this afternoon. While driving through Socorro, NM, I was listening to a local station that ostensibly plays (non pop) country, but also seemed to be playing a fair amount of older rock and (apparently) country blues. After hearing a song that caught my ear that I had never heard before, I learned that John Kay (the front man of Steppenwolf) also did solo work. In 2001 he released a county-blues album that has some good stuff on it. I was a bit amused to learn of something new to me that I really liked via radio. When I got home, Amazon got some money from me for an .mp3 album download.
Here is the best song I’ve heard today:

I don’t really listen to a lot of country, but I went to see Chris Smither in concert recently and it was by far the best show I’ve ever been to.
The video is a different date, same theatre.

I can get behind this. These days I’m primarily a olde country, blues and Americana guy, but I sometimes listen to the country stations driving through that town because they’ll play interesting stuff. My interests tend to run from Blind Willie McTell to RL Burnside, and from Townes Van Zandt and up to Justin Townes Earl.
