After running some errands today I decided to stop into a local brewery. I’ve had their fine beers before but this was my first visit. It’s a really nice space and an hour after opening it was packed. Lots of bicyclists and families.
20 minutes later a family came though the door. A husband, wife, and their little girl (maybe 6 years old) sat at the table just to the left. They ordered some food and some paddles of tasters. The mother pulled a pack of Uno cards out of her purse and they started to play. Sun coming though the window I thought to myself, what a great atmosphere.
10 minutes later I glance over and the mother is giving the girl a drink of her beer.

Some of our most successful local breweries out here are full of families with kids and dogs - I’m still not sure how they get around the blue laws

I had my first beer at 14 (not from my parents). While I think it’s not the worst thing in the world for a younger person to have a taste, 6 years is definitely unacceptable.

On one hand I’m thankful for it. I grew up in an area and time that families in pubs weren’t a problem and it contributed greatly to a sense of community.
On the other hand, there’s this. And health concerns with dogs.
That said, this is a problem even outside of a brewery. Inappropriate to say the least.

I grew up in a very liberal home environment. We’d have beer and even scotch with the adults at 16 or 17. You’re right, this is just too young. More than the physical aspect, what’s the message being sent?

I don’t see any problem with giving a 6 year old a taste, there’s not enough alcohol there to do anything. There may be some argument that it normalizes alcohol in a way that will make the child more comfortable drinking in their teens, but I don’t know how strong that is, and frankly it seems like it would be a bigger problem for older children.
I do think it’s not okay to do it at public establishment. It’s unlikely but it could potentially end up getting them in trouble with someone.
Also I’m assuming that we are just talking about a small taste here, not letting the kid drink an entire glass, even if it is small. I’m also assuming that this is rare thing, if it’s a frequent occurrence, that’s obviously not good either.

I’ve wondered about that too.

That’s a pretty shitty thing to do to the brewery owner/bartender. Now that have to tell a parent what not to let their kid drink despite it being pretty obvious.
Venice, circa 2009. The girl may have been holding the piss beer for her dad.

It was a small taste, but it’s not the size of the drink or the physical effects of that taste that I have issue with. It’s the message it sends to the child I’m thinking of.
There are many potential issues with doing this and absolutely none with not doing it.

On the one hand, normalizing the experience takes away some of the “getting away with stuff” temptation for when they reach their teens. If it’s not taboo, it’s not an adventure, type thing.
My dad would give us sips of his beer when I was really young, granted this was at home and in the 80's, but it was gross. When I got to high school, I had no interest, and it wasn’t some thing to rebel with. In public, though...eeeehhhh....

I wouldn’t be so quick to judge. If my 6 yo son asked what I was drinking, I’d let him have a sip. He’d be grossed out by it and that would be that. No big deal. Hell, when my son was and infant, now the 6 yo, he would gum the rim of the beer bottle I was drinking because it was soothing to his gums while teething. Now if the kid were slugging down the beer, then you have a problem. No worse than a soda pop.

My dad used to give us sips of his beer when we were pretty little, and I think it’s okay, but not in a public place.
Also, the beer my dad gave us tastes of was Old Style, so maybe it was a plot to turn us off to drinking entirely, IDK.

My parents let me have sips of their beers when I was that age. I’m fine. I hang out on Oppo.
