Suggestions? This clip holds the cable in place. If you wrench you know exactly what’s going on here just by looking at it. The slots on both sides are identical and I’m afraid to push the clip hard with some pliers, so I haven’t been able to snap it in around that shiny recessed bit once the cable is inserted all the way. Currently taking a lunch break. Contemplating using baling wire as a substitute which would probably work but I’m not sure if I like that.
Edit: the clip broke. Time for hardware store run #2 of the day

Since the cable has a chamfer on it, have you tried inserting the clip, then pushing the cable in?

Try to push it up a bit. Get a small pick under the loop and hold a rag over it while prying to keep it from launching across the shop.

I’m so confused by this comment lol. There isn’t much springiness to this at all so it won’t really go anywhere, I just can’t force it in without crushing the thing. But thanks!

I just assumed it was really stiff and you were having trouble removing it.
Installing it shouldn’t be too difficult. Good luck. YouTube can be surprisingly helpful with mechanical tips and tricks. It’s saved my ass a few times at work when procedures and documentation aren’t clear.

n.b. that almost certainly exactly the reason for that taper; the way Variance describes is likely how it was originally put together. assembly lines don’t work well when you have to use a lot of swearing, finesse, and multiple tries to assemble something ;)

I would take the doohickey and stick it through the thing-thang left-handed at a 15 degree approach angle.
