Today was like Christmas, except Santa was driving a box truck with a liftgate, I knew exactly what was coming, and I paid for it in the first place. I guess it wasn’t at all like Christmas.

My garage has been severely lacking something for a while, which has slowed down countless projects and otherwise been a great inconvenience. Now, however, I am very close to never having that problem again.

That’s right - I finally got my dream compressor. No, it doesn’t compress dreams, it compresses air. A dream compressor would be neat, though.

What you see is a 5HP, 60gal air compressor rated for 18CFM @ 90 PSI, continuous duty. I cannot fathom anything I would be doing that will come close to running out of air from this, provided I plumb it right (which I intend to do).

I’ve already got the circuit pulled (as a reminder it is no fun trying to pull 10/3 through an insulated wall) and ready to wire in, appropriate oil is somewhere in the mail (they double your warranty period if you use genuine IR oil, so yeah), and I’ve got some people coming by tomorrow morning to help me get it off the pallet and into the corner where I will anchor it for good without it tipping over and crushing me.

I was just window shopping compressors last night and had settled on 60gal/5hp as the right size. That’s an impressive amount of air as most of the ones I saw were more around 12cfm@90psi. I’m sure that one wasn’t cheap, but totally worth it. Enjoy!

You can blow the dust off everything in the neighborhood, and never lose pressure. Like a badass reverse-Dyson.

I guess it wasn’t at all like Christmas.

That’s where you’re wrong. You were unwrapping something that you were really happy to get and excited to see arrive, and that you’d been waiting for. The fact that another side of your personality, one with a wallet, bought it for you and knew what it was is immaterial.

That’s awesome.

I really want to get a rotary compressor because I hate noise.

That would be really cool. This one shouldn’t be too loud (literature says 78dB) but in an otherwise silent garage, the compressor kicking on is always enough to make you jump!

They’re starting to make regular compressors really quiet, so I think now the only advantage of a rotary is being able to constantly keep it going, like a body shop.

For my not-a-shop garage I was looking at a California Air Tools compressor because they’re super quiet. I don’t think I need a 60 gallon compressor for occasional sander use.

This one is rated for 100% duty cycle even, so the advantages may be waning.

It’s overkill for anything I’ll be doing, but it’s nice to know that the compressor will never be holding me back.

I’d bet the only reason to get a rotary is noise reduction then. But I don’t think it would be worth it because regular compressors can be really quiet.

back when I worked at a test lab, we could kill a reciprocating compressor within about a year. but we had enough demand on it (pneumatic cycling fixtures, dry-air purge systems for the environmental chambers, and of course pneumatic tools for the people building the fixtures) where the compressor literally had to run nearly 24/7. Finally the new GM said to hell with this and paid for a Sullair twin-screw. never had a problem with facility air again.

and IIRC a twin screw can get you higher sustained airflow (cfm) for a given horsepower.
