Some rather atrocious rust in one spot means the new carpet has to wait. I’ve actually got the steel back in, but pics will wait for a post tomorrow.

Nice clean lines. What did ya use to make the cuts, out of curiosity?

A last-gen Milwaukee 18ga shear like this:

Kinja'd!!!

The front edge was overlapped and spot welded, as was the right, so i sheared two sides and a little more in the front right corner... before I had to cut a little more out on the left. I took the picture before I got into an old patch, and had to do this:

Ive known I had some rust there for a while, but hadn’t realized quite how much area was affected. Oh well. There’s a small hole in the driver’s side too, but the metal is hearty, not a 16x16+ area of weak metal. The messed up thing is that I have to make sure the tunnel area patch is leak proof, because I have a rear main leak I haven’t addressed. If I don’t get it sealed, I’ll have 10w-30 Valvoline Max Life in my brand new carpet.

I could have used the air chisel in the main post to cut the metal too, because we’ve got a shear tip for it, but I didn’t think of it. Most people just have a chisel, but they’re very versatile - we’ve got a point, a chisel, a shear,a round tip, two smoothing hammers, and two rivet tools for that thing.

On the bright side, the coating of 10w-30 will keep the new metal from oxidizing! Seriously though, maybe a blast of rubberized undercoating is in order to really seal things up? Just a thought, though unsure if it’s necessarily a good one.

Wish I had taken metal shop in HS. Wood shop was cool, and I still have the bookshelf and whale shaped coat rack I made, but having some metalworking skill would be really freaking nice. Luckily my brother in law is an accomplished welder, so if push comes to shove, he’s my metal guy.

I’m going to coat the bottom in rust encapsulation undercoat, which, since it has elements to interact with rust, is probably acrylic and less likely to dissolve in contact with oil than normal undercoat. Probably. It’s good stuff but doesn’t foamy-grease everything closed quite like normal undercoat.

Some parts may resist sealing all the way closed (pinholes), so I may seal holes with Lexel after that. As long as the oil doesn’t break the adhesion... May also put rubber tape topside. If it goes soft it’ll be a warning.

The patch I made is kind of rough, but it’s pretty close. I roughed in the grooves with a vise set open to the right width and a brick hammer... which I sure didn’t learn anywhere respectable. Eh. I still need to smooth the corners off the new (heavier) estwing brick hammer’s chipping end to make it shape metal as well as the other we have, which is the shizz. Overworked the metal a bit because sharp.
