First on-site interview. What do you think I should expect?

Hola Oppo!

Sometime next week I will be visiting a perspective employer for my on-site interview.

If I understand correctly, this is the last part of the whole interview process ( I completed a task, had a technical phone interview and now the final step). It’s scheduled to go for almost 6 hours.

I have NEVER had to have an onsite interview before. This one is with 8 (eight) different people, and from what I understand I will work with some of them very closely.

What should I know? What should I expect? How can I prepare better for a mille of questions? What kind of questions should I expect?

Thanks in advance for your help and insights!

Just remember to wear clean underwear and you’ll do fine.

Looks like they already like you!

Read up on what other people’s interview experience was like on glassdoor.com.

And just be confident and positive.

Just be relaxed and be yourself. Unless it is for a super technical position, they are most likely just trying to get a feel for how you behave in a work environment. Being able to confidently just talk about your past achievements and talk in a professional manner is generally all you need to do. Some interviewers in some companies definitely will be like “here, solve this quadratic expression in 90 seconds” or some other bullshit. But I have never experienced that even as an Engineer. As long as you are somewhat qualified, it should be easy to answer any real questions. Everything else is just socializing.

Expect the first question to be “so tell me about yourself.”

Study the company, obviously. Dress nicely. A business suit would probably be overkill, but I’d button my collar and wear a necktie. But then again, unlike you, I am old. Relax and be yourself. DON’T TELL ANY JOKES. DON’T MENTION OR BE DRAWN INTO A CONVERSATION ABOUT POLITICS. Not the time nor the place.

They mainly want to get a feel for your personality and how you fit in with the team. So be yourself and be prepared to talk about yourself in general, previous jobs, etc. You MAY get technical questions depending on the people but most interviewers are just trying to keep it high level and get a feel for you, if you’re a good long term fit, etc.

Also go in with questions for each person (hopefully you have some info on them to be able to research their backgrounds, roles, etc.). Both general about their time at the company etc., and specific about their roles, how they will interact with yours, etc. Also study up on the company to have questions about their future plans, where they see your position and team focusing on in the foreseeable future, etc.

In general this is the stage where both sides are trying to make sure it will be a good long term fit before committing, so be sincere in all of this.

No, sir. It’s a marketing analytics spot. Heavier on analytics than marketing for me.

Duly noted! Thank you very much for your advice.

Have you experienced similar interviews (I know the company history back and forth. They’re new and I’ve had them on my radar from the beginning.)

The position is for marketing analytics. I’ll be using mostly Google’s built in analytics and Facebook’s, some Python. The people who work there are VERY VERY qualified to do what they do. Wharton grads, PhD’s, heavy hitters in R, Python, SQL etc.

That’s always great to get a candidate who’s actually been a devotee of the company and have actual excitement about them, instead of you know just faking it because hey it’s a job!

Good luck, sounds like you’re well prepared!

If all else fails, a brojob will go a long way.

Hope you check this right before you go in to meet the interviewers.

a brojob? am I supposed to give or receive, since this is an on-site interview?

That’s something that requires you to gauge the situation.

If they are head over heels, play hard to get and ask them for one.

If things are going south and they seem unimpressed, just float out some feelers about your passion for giving brojobs . It should be subtle, but it will make an impact.

Of course! That’s what the whole MeToo thing is about. They don’t want to be left out!

(This entire exchange is a joke. I don’t condone sexual misbehavior or assault.)
