Hey guys! So I’m helping a buddy out looking to buy a car and boy have we found a winner. Sort of. I feel the price is about $1000 too high but I want your input to see what ya’ll think.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

so that’s the car. 2011 Camry XLE v6. 80k On the clock. it’s been on lot for 6 months already has had a price drop from over 10k to $9,900.

we are officially looking at the car after work (we work in the same place and I’m currently his driver) but at lunch we swung by to peep a look to have a better idea about the car. Since the photos provided where taken in the snow and the interior are sort of out of focus.

So here’s a run down of what we saw.

Touch up paint, touch up paint every where. the hood has little rust pits all over the front of the hood. probably lived on a gravel road if I had to guess. each and every little pit has a little bit of rust bubbles, and have been hit with touch up paint. the rear passenger door sill has a dent by the upper door that is just rusted, no touch up paint, spot is about a dime in size. Also rear passenger door has a ding that goes to bare metal. both sides are covered with clear coat scratches. white, but not deep. the doors all look to have been repeatedly smashed into something upon opening. all the edges on the door are chipped away.

Interior speaking, I don’t believe any one ever sat in the rear seats. the front seats how ever look like no one ever touched them with leather conditioner. I’d also wager that lager, older folks owned the car based on the wear on the seats. there is significant cracking on the outer edges of each of the front seats. you can tell they pivoted and stood up. the bolsters look worn where the cracking is as well. how ever so long as they get conditioned frequently they shouldn’t continue to wear too bad.

We haven’t driven yet but the car fax shows a good history of maintenance (reason number two i assume older folks as everything was done at the purchasing dealer) so I expect a good driving machine when we take it out later.

My thoughts are this: This is no 9,900 car. the body and interior are what I would call fair at best, maybe good, but too many dings and touch up for good really. I think any thing below 9k (provided the mechanical are solid) is a steal. I’m thinking put $8500 on the table with a firm at $8750. What do you think?

I still think you’re being generous. With the way the condition is described, I wouldn’t pay over $8k, and that’s if I actually wanted a Camry.

Full disclosure - I have no idea of used Camry values.

Camry was one of the finest cars on the road, in 1990...

I checked Car Guru and it looks like mid-9s is actually a pretty good price for 80k miles. Since the condition isn’t great, i would say 8750-9250 is your likely selling point. Seems like your plan would work.

Why a Camry though?

he drove the impala and basically said “I want a car like this that doesn’t suck” hahaha so basically a v6 Camry. but really he’s just looking for a nice car at a good price and he showed me this and I’m like hey that’s actually pretty nice. so no real reason.

FWIW he can get a Lexus ES350 or even a GS for a few more dollars and it’s basically the same thing but nicer.

8500 seems fair.

With the salesperson present, slowly walk around the car and closely inspect it, being sure to touch with your finger every blemish you see, without saying much. This mentally devalues the car, and is one of the very same things many dealers do while appraising a trade. Don’t go overboard poo-pooing it, but furrow your brow and twist your mouth in dissatisfaction whenever you see something you don’t like, pehaps making the occasional comment about the cost of remediating whatever issue you’re unhappy with.

If there is another car your friend has been considering, be sure to openly discuss it with your friend in front of the salesperson, but do not involve the salesperson in that part of the conversation unless they interject themselves. Be ready with a retort which paints the competing car purchase in a positive, but not too positive light. (Other car has a few more miles, little better shape, cheaper, Toyota reliability... Kinda prefer this color though, but 3 grand is 3 grand... Etc.)

Assuming you’re paying cash, offer $1500-2k less than sticker. They won’t bite, but you can easily come up from your low-ball offer to the 1k off price you really want to pay. Don’t go too low though, or they’ll know you’re effing with them and might actually “throw you off the lot.”

Do not be afraid to walk if they won’t meet your terms.

It’s a science, and I absolutely brutalize them without them knowing it’s even happening half of the time.

Since when does a Camry suck less than an Impala (especially one with a 3800)?

Huh, same car the wife’s parents have. 10/10 would take it over a Camry. It’s comfortable, reliable, and quite efficient (28mpg average).

I don’t disagree. I didn’t buy a Camry. ha but not to say I wouldn’t have, I don’t really love my car but I don’t hate it either. we just exist together, generally in an agreeable manner. You can easily nitpick the car tho. So I get it.

I might have an intense hatred for anything Toyota after being jaded by the epic shitbox that was a 2012 Corolla S which we bought brand new, so my opinions may be biased on the subject.
