“I am selling my mkii Celica Supra
160k miles 5 spd manual trans
clean title in hand. Digital dash.
Runs and drives great. Clean inside and body.
Must see can drive it anywhere and back!
Paint isn’t perfect it’s 33 years old.
Includes a ton of extras.”
Goal is to get it running, paint it, and then just enjoy. Not a concourse restoration but C&C worthy. My dad has wanted one since he worked at dealership when they were released and this could be a good opportunity. Got the guy down to $2000 and just need to go to Jacksonville and trailer it back. This is a 1985 with the digital dash, he also has the original wheels, the original stereo, and a new right front fender to replace the current one that is dinged. How much is paint going to run me? Is this too much work where I would be better off buying an already nice one?

Do it!
Just get a plastidip kit. Or you could go cheap on the paint, since you’re not looking for concourse. Single stage maaco jobber, not too much money.

All I’m going to say is that if you paint it, you need to make sure you can find/make a replacement decal.

Awesome! And the digital dash works, too! Those wheels have gotta go - glad he’s got the originals.
Paint varies greatly depending on how perfect you want it, how much prep, etc etc. - do your homework on that and find the right guys and you’ll be fine.

Depends on the paint quality you’d like. When I’ve thought about fintail restoration, paint and bodywork budget is at least 10K, as I don’t want to do it again. You could probably get something done for a quarter of that, though, if you shop around, maybe do some prep yourself, and don’t demand concours perfection.
I recall the rear part of the hatches on these is a rust nest, nice to see this one looks intact, bodes well.

Is Maaco worth it nowadays? My family got a couple cars painted by them in the early 2000s and every car was eventually worse off than before they got painted.
We had a pink Cavalier painted black, aside from overspray, the paint began peeling off to bare metal after 6 months. We then had a red Windstar that had just a couple parts repainted by a different Maaco...more overspray, then poor colour matching and more peeling. :/

Paint price? Depends on a lot.
Pricing in your area?
Scuff and shoot or full respray?
Quality of materials?
Disassemble or spray as-is?
Repair work needed?
It can really vary. I’d say anywhere from $5,000-$12,000 for good work.

Define worth it? If you need a quick spray to cover or protect the metal, then yeah, with the understanding that you are getting what you’re paying for. But long term? No, plan on doing it again later.

Depends on a LOT of things.
First, if I remember correctly they are franchises. If the owner is a boots-to-asses kind of person the place can be run OK and be able to do good work.
Two, you totally get what you pay for. I’ve seen cars come from Maaco with painted weatherstripping and they were stripped with steel wool. The wool fibers rusted in the new paint leaving orange flecks. This was done on a bunch of cars.
Three, do however much you can yourself. If you strip the car to the hulk and have them spray that (and pay as much as you can for quality work) you can get decent results. Decent. Not great. But OK.

This is what people need to understand. Good paint jobs START at $4-5k.

Just materials can cost that much on a “good” paint job. Not even a perfect show winner job.

Paint it yourself. Can do a good paint job for under $500.

Also an option, if you have the means.

Or you can do it yourself.
Materials will cost you $500-$1000 for good stuff, far cheaper if using something like Omni brand (which is a PPG knockoff IIRC and actually very good).

Good compressor, paint gun, clean garage with a good fan.
It’s not ideal, but it can make some very good paint jobs very cheap, not that I have any experience with that:

No doubt. When I used to work in car restoration I would tell people that if you want your restoration to be a show stopper, bodywork and paint is EVERYTHING.

I think that paint will come back a lot nicer than you think with a good cleaning and buffing.

For 2 grand, if you don’t buy that I’m flying to Florida and buying it myself. I’d stab a nun to have a rust free, running mkII supra local to me for 2 grand. Agreed with AdamFTW, have a professional detailer buff the shit out of it. Bet it comes back pretty well.

250 hours if you have metal to repair, easily.

Prepping the surfaces is really the hardest part, once that’s done, painting isn’t hard IMO, though I’ve been doing body work since I was 14 so take it for what it is.
That being said, time and patience permitting, I think anyone with some know how can easily pull off a quality paint job.

That last van, is it yours?
Long-Voyager
> random001
04/18/2018 at 12:16 | 0 |
They’re all mine except for the truck. They were all painted in a garage, with a small compressor like this:
, a cheapo harbor freight gun, and a squirrel cage fan under the garage door to evacuate vapors/overspray (not EPA approved BTW).
The vans were painted using leftover stuff my uncle had laying around his shop (PPG). The satin was actually thinned Rustoleum (just wanted a quick respray). The Purple car was Omni brand paint. The truck used PPG. Clear coat was Napa brand clear coat. They are all as sprayed, I could have easily gotten them like glass had I taken the time to wet sand/buff after, but being daily drivers I didn’t care that much, they looked great as is.

Sand, clean, tape, wipe with wax/grease remover, seal, base coat (usually 4 coats for me) tacking between coats, clear coat (4-10 coats depending) again tacking between coats.
That’s the basic rundown, obviously it’s more in depth than that, but that’s the jist. Once it’s done you can take care of impurities by wet sanding/buffing.

Overland vans are a thing. Honestly, I don’t see a reason they shouldn’t be:
Mine’s only FWD right now and it goes everywhere. I have plans to find an AWD version to swap the AWD parts under mine, add a 3" lift, and 32s to make it unstoppable. ;)

Is the AWD good enough for such things? I know they aren’t, like, 4WD, lockers, and all that.

The 2nd gen Caravan/Voyager AWD was very stout. They’ve been proven to handle 500+whp stock.
