I know that Nibby tends to work on old PCs, so I don’t know if this is of any interest. It may not run Windows (yet), but it is complete and purchased from the original owner. I bought it mostly for the case since pre-Intel Macs are borderline useless these days, and will probably either transplant my Mac mini or current HP hackintosh into this case. Not bad for $20...

yee powermac G5s are pretty much useless... too old to be useful, too new to be retro. might be handy if you wanted to run classic mac stuff

there are some guides here and here

Thanks for the links. I’ve still got a couple of modified G3s (beige and B&W) as well as a couple of G4s, one of which sports a once mega-expensive dual 1.8 GHz CPU upgrade with a copper heatsink that is probably more valuable than the whole computer. I haven’t fired up any of them since I moved 5 years ago and don’t see that happening anytime soon. The G5 was probably just too little, too late, and I question whether it will ever have any collector’s value. At this point I don’t think I should feel bad about gutting it.

I’m currently running a pretty decent hackintosh on an HP workstation that I found on eBay - 3.4 GHz i7, 16 GB RAM and a 2 TB drive for $200; not as good a price as you got on yours, but not bad. I threw in some parts I had laying around, including a GTX 670, a 240 GB SSD and a 2 TB SSHD and it’s a screamer, probably more computer than I really need. I figure that I should be able to run it for years before it needs replacement.

G3 and G4 conversions are much easier

I’ve heard that they can double as space heaters. I couldn’t run a space heater at the same time as my Athlon X4 system or I would trip the breaker, not that I really needed a heater when that system was on. And I did notice a substantial decrease in my electric bill years ago when I switched from a G4 to a Mac mini. As much as I like big, powerful desktops, there’s something to be said for a small desktop or notebook that has 90% of the computing power whilst consuming 75% less electrical power.
