So I have a pair of Bose 901s with the EQ that I want to get working. I have an Insignia NS-R2000 receiver with a shitty Panasonic CD changer. I think I need an Amp, but beyond that I don’t know where to start.

 tips on setting these up.

Note that depending on how old they are, the urethane foam surrounds on the speaker drivers may be degraded if not outright failed. The foam tends to become brittle with age and the surrounds may tear or crumble away into dust. if any need repair, you can get a kit for these speakers from Parts Express:

The insignia receiver has an integrated preamp and amp in it. You don’t need a separate one.

Connect the speakers to the speaker terminals on the insignia. Connect the cd player to the cd input. Connect the eq to the aux port. Out from receiver to in on eq. Out from eq to in on receiver.

And ONLY connect record players to the phono port. (If you were to hook up, say, a cd player to that port you will more than likely blow every speaker connected to the system)

Thanks! Do you think my Receiver has enough juice to power the 901s properly?

Just took a quick look and if I’m not mistaken the 901's require around 75 watts per channel minimum, and I believe the insignia outputs 100 watts per channel, so you should be good to go.

What about the so called “tape monitoring” I’ve heard about? Something about how the EQ interacts with the receiver?

Unnecessary, and was mostly used for recording to cassette if I’m not mistaken. It was a relic of the days before preamps had any appreciable eq ability from what I understand. You’re not missing anything as far as I know, unless you plan to start making mixtapes from questionably eq’d sources.
