Can I talk for a moment about how much I hate the tail lights on the current Impala?

I know people are complaining a lot about the lack of cohesion in modern car design, with random creases and angles and LEDs and fake vents everywhere. But these lights just straight up don’t look like they were designed at all. They’re just this sort of godawful melted blob that manages to somehow make the concept of looking “organic” and even possibly “alien” look completely boring.

This picture doesn’t quite do them justice; lit up at night they just look dopey and cheap. This design could benefit so much from some thin, clean LED tail lights, given that the rest of the car actually looks pretty good.

It’s a car that is designed in a way that says “this is a safe bet” no risks were taken, because it’s aim at buyers who don’t want a risk. Older buyers who already don’t trust complicated modern cars, but do trust the name Chevrolet Impala because they owned one 40 years ago.

Basically a car that says “does the idea of inserting a chip card confuse and scare you? Do you think the new Prius looks like something from planet Glorp? Well boy howdy do we have some “bologna on white bread with mayo and a craft single” looking cars for you.

The Buick LaCross is for the same age group but those who don’t write checks at gas stations.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

You just described the entirety of modern design. Alien and disconcerting shapeless forms impossible to discern any natural or emotional connection to.

I think the whole car is “eh, fine”, but bland. Not that it needs to be exciting , but I wish that it was at least recognizable as a descendant of previous Impalas.

Personally, I don’t mind them, aside from the location of the backup lights...that’s the thing that bugs me about them.

LEDs could certainly improve them, that I can easily agree with.

They don’t bother me nearly as much as the blind spots when renting one.

Well maybe you’ll be glad to hear the Impala and Malibu are getting the axe after this year. Impala had a good 50+ year run.

When elderly folks can’t turn their necks, why bother with rear quarter visibility? All they want is steering that’s numb and a trunk large enough for a compact car. The Impala delivers.

I don’t usually comment on a day old thread, but I was just thinking about this yesterday myself. I like the rear of the Impala, and I like the look of the light cluster in daylight. But, when the lights are actually on, the cuboidal shape of the lighting elements messes up the whole flow of the car’s rear. It’s not well conceived.
