This is the car my mom got when she graduated medical school, except with a black interior. My want is strong as well. The price is good (so far), and I’d so get it for her if I could. Loved that car when I was a kid.

That beautiful. I’ve actually been in one of these convertible and all. Nice ride.

Yes, it’s a gorgeous car in the pictures. I really don’t know where it will end up, but want to get a better feel for how much metal v. bondo it has and whether it runs/drives decent. If that checks out, and I get the wife’s OK, I might bid, up to a point.

Also - that big birthday is in the next week or so, isn’t it? Are you having a party to celebrate?

Right colors, right engine, right transmission. Looks to be a pretty nice driver, too.

I’d be shocked if there wasn’t some rust out of sight under that new coat of Target Red. Still a good price if it doesn’t rocket up too much.

If you could get the wife to go along with it, I’d say do it. Much better choice that those damn AMGs you’ve been fawning over. ;)

Yep, my wife is telling the neighborhood to save the date. We tend to do these as block parties when the weather cooperates (and do it anyway but just drink a bit more when it doesn’t). For her 50th, we had a massive BBQ pitch in, and I made a home-made ice cream cake.

That’s only 2 hours from me, if I wasn’t busy as fuck I might be willing to.

According to the seller, the paint is a bit older, and was done by a previous owner. Actually a good sign to me that it’s not fresh. I wouldn’t expect it to be totally rust-free, but I’ve seen cars where the bottom 3 inches of the quarters and fenders were nothing but bondo, and I want nothing to do with that.

I’m not entirely sure where this will end up, but it will go up quite a bit from where it’s at now. Certainly well into the $20's and $30-40k wouldn’t totally shock me - - but as of right now, I have a lot of unanswered questions on the body, and engine stampings too. Those will have big impacts on the price.

The AMG monkey business is a completely different issue. My lease on the Lexus ends next month, so that HAS to be replaced with something. Don’t worry, I’m not buying that AMG. I just find it amusing that the M-B salesman is trying to push it on me, so I’ll test drive it later today or tomorrow just for kicks. For that, though, I do want to buy a used car rather than lease a new one. I tend to keep cars a long time - in fact, I haven’t gotten RID of a car since 2000. A used E550 with a warranty is pretty high on my list right now, but still kicking around a few other things.

Nice! ! Hopefully the weather cooperates - though it doesn’t really matter, you’ll have a great time either way!

Thanks! Busy is a good thing - getting settled into the new job/city/apartment etc etc etc?

A used E550 would be a great daily. You could also get a convertible version and still have it viable for where you live all season.

Yes, $30-40k is not out of the ball park for good examples of that Olds, although ones that have been driven really shouldn’t go for more than $25k, in my view.

I need that back seat room, so a 4 door sedan is a must for me.

The difference between a $25k car and a $40k car is all in the details, and is hard to sort out from photos — I would have to go down and take a look. But I’m not interested in the $40k version anyways.

The fact that this a red, 4 speed convertible that *appears* to be a true 442 all works against me, as does the seller’s belief that the engine is original (though he needs to prove it). I have a strong suspicion this will sell for more than what I’d be willing to pay right now. We’ll see.

Just put some matching headrests in so you don’t get whiplash in an accident.

Hey, at least it has seatbelts (in the front)!

They’re probably made of GM cobwebs ... check the mountings for rust!

True, but that would be the least of my worries in buying that car - - it’s an easy fix if so.

True - I am just a big fan of safety (now that I’m aging, and drive 4-5 times a year). A car that’s a box for carrying your airbags in? Fine by me.

Yeah, been either moving, packing, dog sitting, apartment hunting, out of town, or something since the second last weekend in February. I’ve got this weekend free before I jet off to Europe for 10 days. I’m ready to stop moving.

Oh, I hear you, believe me. And I’ve struggled with that a bit myself. I’m 50 now, and have a wife and child (under 2).

34 years ago, my first two cars were 1965 GM mid-sized cars. First one was a Cutlass like this one (hence my interest), 2nd one was a Skylark convertible that lacked ANY seatbelts. A couple years later, I owned another Oldsmobile (‘64) that had no seatbelts or outside mirrors.

I didn’t give that much thought at the time, but I certainly look at that a bit differently now. That said, many of the issues (starting with the brakes) I will just live with - but I certainly will insist on belts, and may look into headrests.

Yeah it’s vacation, more for a friends wedding but yeah. Should be good. I wouldn’t mind it being a business trip for the sole reason I wouldn’t have to pay for it all.
