In response to the Nissan Xterra’s initial success, Ford attempted to capitalize on its distinctive look by sticking a tubular roof rack on the Escape. What I never knew until now is that it could accept a “No Boundaries” attachment which could slide out, down, and lock into the rear bumper to create a vertical mounting area (or be slid back up onto the roof for easier loading).
I hereby begrudgingly assign Respect Points(tm) to the first-gen Ford Escape and now must begin pricing out stainless drawer slides to make one for the Xterra. Even without the lift, big tire meat, and rear ladder it was always a pain to load the rack because I’m much shorter than it...

Whoa. Never knew that. Time to go play with my neighbor’s Escape with that goody roof rack... I be they don’t know about it either.

A friend of mine recently got an Escape with this rack and, actually, it’s pretty awesome. The build of the thing is so much better than you’d think, how it got through the bean counters... I dunno.

It got through the bean counters because “it’s just some cheap parts, don’t worry about it”

I feel like I need to find one of these for my wife’s Escape. Considering I’ve never used a roof rack though, and I actually took the factory two bar rack off her Escape* it would probably be a waste of money.
*Wanted to see if it would decrease the wind noise and help a tiny bit with mileage (which isn’t really good). I can’t tell if it helped with either and haven’t bothered to put it back on.

On a side note, that is absolutely my favorite way to carry a bike. I used to have a rack that attached at the top and bottom of the hatch on our GL wagon which oriented the bike the same way. It had less resistance than mounting the bike sideways with a standard rear rack. The closest thing I can find these days is the Seasucker mounts.
