I fucking nailed it and they love me.
I will be singing the US national anthem in exchange for tickets to various Motorsports events, and even the Canadian anthem a couple times.
Now to learn Oh Canada...

Congratulations mate.
Are you going to do English or mixed English and French for the Canadian national anthem?
Also you could mess with some by singing The Maple Leaf Forever. Lol. Only kidding, best not.

I’m assuming English. They were so impressed that I acted like it was no problem to learn it at all, I may blow their minds if I offer to learn it in French.

Is it sad that being born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, I can sing o’canada better than the star spangled banner? I can’t do it in French but I still think my rendition is pretty good

Congrats again mate.
I’m sure you’ll knock it right out the park.
Be thankful you don’t have to learn the British national anthem and United Kingdom national anthems.
For some the question with the British anthem is, do you learn one verse, two verses or three verses.
Then there’s the English, Northern Irish, Scottish and Welsh anthems.

The Star Spangled Banner is a bit of a bitch of a song. It’s not for the faint of heart.

Oh Canada is a better song. The Star Spangled Banner is awkward and its got too great a range for most people.
Congrats.

Oh definitely. I feel like a national anthem should be a song that’s not too difficult for everyone to sing, The Star Spangled Banner is not that. America The Beautiful would have been a much better choice. Or we could have just stuck with Battle Hymn, because it’s so kick-ass.

congrats. I’ve heard the French/English version about a zillion times. I can speak very crude French, and know many French-Canadian dirty words. But I’ve never had any clue What the French parts of O Canada even are.

I’m definitely in the America the Beautiful camp. It’s a song about the country, not about a flag during some obscure battle in a forgotten war. Interestingly, the SSB wasn’t made the official national anthem until 1931. I remember hearing an earlier version of the song, before it became standardized. It was missing the raised fourth (secondary dominant) in the third measure. I liked it that way.
As a musician, I feel pretty strongly about the song. Even though I don’t care for it musically, it drives me nuts when people turn it into the Star Spangled Ballad. And everybody makes such a big deal about Whitney Houston’s version, but she sang it in 4/4 because you can’t have a back beat in 3/4. I think there should be a more or less standard version of the song, but I get that we’re a country all about freedoms, so we can sing it any way we please. But if I had to pick, I’d go with the performance by the US Marine Band and call it a day.

Ugh, yes, I hate it when people ham it up too much. Or at all, really.

Though I must say, I dug Lady Gaga’s performance at the Super Bowl.

I was pleasantly surprised. I knew she had the ability to do a good job, but like everyone else feared that her theatricality would take hold.

Not to mention it’s a
racist song
. But hey, national anthems are supposed to encompass the country’s identity, right*?
*I’m half joking here, at most
