I’ve got one of these cases sitting around in my dining room, and thought I’d check on the current market price. A couple of years ago when I got it the eBay ads were around $800-900, and I thought that was a little high. OK, mine isn’t in the original box and doesn’t include a bunch of Razer crap, but seriously - does anyone actually pay these kinds of prices for these cases? Maybe someone will trade a 980 Ti straight across for this thing...

Why stop at a 980Ti? If that’s actually what people are selling these for you should be able to get a 1080Ti for it.

You are correct, but I don’t want to be greedy; I only spent $0.50 on the case, so I guess anything is technically a good return on investment, even a Snickers bar. If I do go for a 1080 Ti I’ll have to upgrade my OS, but I guess that’s a small price to pay for some kick-ass performance.

Why in the world is that case so expensive

I haven’t a clue. It’s a nice piece, liquid cooled and all, and was part of a high-end gaming machine a decade ago. It’s very solid, huge and heavy, but it’s just a computer case.
Personally I like my computers to be as innocuous as possible, with no fancy lights or panels or gadgets. I don’t want to see or hear it, or really have to interact with it at all. Give me a good monitor or three, decent mouse and a solid keyboard and I’m happy.

To be fair, it has that late 2000s “professional” aesthetic mixed with the “gamer” look.
Probably doesn’t have modern amenities but damn does it look nice.

The design of the case is why people like it. It is a ridiculous amount of overkill from the internal skunkworks of HP before they bought OMEN. It has historical significance while also being a pretty awesome case and it’s also a stunningly goodl ooking case without being over the top. It has a unique design and it pretty much hasn’t had a follow up in the years that followed. My advice would be to trade for a gaming PC, full stop. Or sell it for the ridiculous price people want to pay for it. don’t overinflate, but don’t undersell yourself either. You never know when something could happen to it and you end up with a worthless pile of scrap.

Hopefully I can find a smoker to take it off my hands. Where’s Rob Ford when you need him? (Dead, yes, but you know what I meant...)

Maybe Nibby would buy it from you. Does it run DOS?

DOS? You mean the dark place? We can do that. I think it might be too new for Nibby being only about a decade old. It might be worth a try, though. I could slap the guts of my kick-ass Windoze 98 box in there for the full retro crash-o-matic experience.

Windows 3.1

That’s PTSD-inducing for me. Way back in the ‘90s, in my first IT job, I was the only one in the department that knew how to troubleshoot and repair 3.1. Torture, pure torture, month after agonizing month until we phased out those dinosaurs. NT 4.0 on EVERYTHING! Then I became the Novell and cc:Mail admin - kind of a lateral move, and equally archaic today...

I was a novell guy too. Did you guys use Groupwise Heat for logging/tracking/asset management? I actually enjoyed it at the time.

We actually created our own tracking tool in Notes, the same software we used for project management. When I was at Hughes I worked in SGS (satellite ground systems), but the main project I worked on for a few years was a billing system for DirecTV Internaitonal (Galaxy Latin America and DirecTV Japan). Good times, great company. I miss that place.
