But, and this is a big but, He’s a big part of why you and I don’t have dash knobs embedded in our skulls. And we will continue to relentlessly make fun of him for it. And then there’s the most important thing: More Corvairs for Dash!

I saw Nader give a speech a few years back...
It was one of the most inspiring things I’ve ever experienced. No joke.
Not only is Nader a bad-ass, but his life’s work is born from his concern for his fellow man... Total white hat.

I love 60's cars, but they’re total deathtraps. Ralph was right. And since he bought a Corvair from chevy, He was more than entitled to his opinion. It’s not like he wrote it from the back seat of his Chauffeured Lincoln

Why were you putting dash knobs in your skull? Why would anyone do that? I don’t have dash knobs in my skull and Ralph didn’t stop me.

Yeah— it’s not like he was anti-car. He was just one of the first to recognize that stuff like sharp metal dashboards + no seatbelts = a lot of *unnecessary* carnage....
And realistically, automobile safty is just a tiny fraction of what he’s worked for over the years...

hey where are you in the mountains. I’m planning on some mountain driving (in a corvair) very soon.

planning to pass thru. Had engine trouble 5 minutes out of Denver on friday. In that 5 minutes, the Denver airport had closed due to weather and we had to go the opposite direction to Co Springs. Spent a whole day there. was provided quiznos by the airline. This car is actually maybe a thousand feet higher than Denver, so downhill all the way home. What do you know about high altitude carburetors going to the flatlands?

Car is at 7199 feet.

So are you doing a fly and ride for the corvair?
Cool if so..
Not a big deal going from high to lower w/ carbs... it’s the opposite that gives them trouble. It should be running a tiny bit lean at lower altitudes (assuming it’s actually been adjusted for higher altitudes).
Also— was curious as to exactly what was nader’s issue with the corvair, found a pretty interesting article :

read that yesterday. A big part of it is not having rock hard front tires. Saw a video, using Nader’s actual Corvair with the old swing axle set up. one man’s “handling issues” are another man’s “whole lotta fun”

Dangerous is a relative term. Ever take apart a VW bus? I ain’t letting my kids ride on the highway in one of those! And we own at least 2 well maintained antique death machines, So I’m not that picky. (post 1972 buses have an engineered crumple zone. but still.)

He’s a good guy, he’s just happy we’re alive to make fun of him.

True that danger is relative... And yeah, I drove a vanagon for years... so very familiar with how fuct you’d be in a collision...
But the article seems to make sense.. I think corvairs are a neat design, but maybe a handful for the general, unsuspecting populace...

If you can picture the moving parts of your car and what they’re doing while you drive it, and just a general grasp of physics, you should be fine. If you learned to drive in a chevy cruze you’re not prepared for this level of Motoring.
