The result of all the interviews I’ve been on lately, including one here in Madison, is that my best job option is the one in Georgetown I !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! last week. Which means, holy shit, I’m moving to DC. Oh, and my lease in Madison ends 4/30, and we need to find a place to live in DC that isn’t my parents’ house.
(My parents actually would let my wife and I stay with them for a while if needed, but we’re grownups with 3 cats. Even in my parents’ decently big house, that’s a little close for comfort.)
Anyone have a townhouse or condo in Bethesda, Potomac, or Rockville, MD they want to rent out on the cheap?

I have family that rents a place out near pentagon city, but not sure if that helps. plus I think its already rented out. I’ll check though if you want.

Congrats and welcome to the east coast. I’m not in the DC area, but hopefully there are some Oppos in that area.

The good news is its a good time to find rentals as we are geting to the end of the school year and all the transfers in and out of the area are starting to happen. Unfortunately I’m on the VA side so that is out of the realm of the realtors I know. If I can dig anything up I’ll let you know.

Hell, it’s worth checking. Pentagon City is actually closer to my new job in Georgetown than the parts of MD we had been looking, which are around where my parents live.
My wife may or may not want to be that in the middle of everything, and if I were to guess I bet parking is a challenge and we have our 2 cars. But can’t hurt to find out.

There were multiple townhouses in MD that we were interested in but someone put in an application on before I got all my answers on my interviews and was able to pick a new job. There’s one that’s still available but the problem with it is it’s only the top 2 stories, and the basement is a separate unit with an entrance on the back. So there’s a back patio...that’s the front entrance for that other unit. The storage space is limited and our only outdoor space would be the patch of grass between the front door and parking lot.

Ugh...that whole area sucks. My personality doesn’t fit in there...neither does my desire to drive my car on open roads.
Good luck!

I heard condos in Trump Tower are cheap.

Given the DC housing market, its mostly of a function of how much are you willing it sit in traffic vs. pay a truckload for a smaller house that is closer. I have friends with ridiculous commutes (that telework when possible) but that is the trade off for green space.

Manhattan is a little outside my commute radius.

I love this phrase but it has never been more appropriate in my life until just now:
CONGRATUDOLENCES!

There’s lots of gorgeous roads if you get out of the city, but commuting does suck. My personality fits in because I grew up there but have 18 years of seasoning in the Midwest.

Oh yeah, I’m well aware. I made two trips out to interview, the first one with a job in the northern part of Rockville where we were actually considering buying a house way out in Gaithersburg, but that job would’ve drove me nuts. My parents live right on the southern edge of Rockville, next to Potomac. Since I’ll be working in Georgetown, I basically have my parents’ house as the kinda fencepost of how far out I’m willing to commute from, hence the rental townhouses. If I had been ready to accept the job in Georgetown last week I probably could have snagged one of the ones I like but I didn’t get clarity on all my options until today.

My brother in law’s brother is getting ready to rent out their place.
It’s in
this neighborhood

No, the
other
Trump Tower; the one in DC. It’s still white, though, because they wouldn’t let him paint it gold.

The DC housing market can be split into 3 distinct categories:
1) More than you can afford, pal.
2) It will take you 2 hours to get anywhere.
3) You’re gonna get shot.
On the bright side, the DC area rivals CA for proximity to awesome racetracks. Summit Point Raceway is close by. VIR, NJMP, and PIRC aren’t a bad drive either. Driving down the road that leads to the Washington Monument while the cherry blossoms are blooming is awesome, although you’re late for that.

Any reason you aren’t considering NoVa?

That section of beltway in the morning (outer loop, 270 to American Legion) is a nightmare in the morning, and the reverse a nightmare in the afternoon. You might be better off in VA anyway, and dealing with Key Bridge

The part of MD I’m looking at, I could shoot down Seven Locks Rd all the way to Canal Rd, or cut over on River Rd for a while. The entrance to the garage at my soon-to-be office is on Water St.

It’s not entirely off the table but I grew up in MoCo and I like the area. My parents are in Rockville, grandma’s in Silver Spring, and brother in NW DC.

I caught some cherry blossoms while I was in town for my interviews last week. If I end up living in the part of MD where I grew up, my commute would be along the river every day. So at least I’d have some nice scenery while sitting in in hellacious traffic.

Thats not that bad then. I’ve used that route to Clara Barton to bypass that section if things go real bad (I live in Vienna, work in Silver spring).

Congrats and best of luck! I’m happy for you and your family, moving for a job is huge and definitely takes guts!!

My parents are right on the edge of Rockville & Potomac, west of 270. I stayed with them on my couple trips out to DC for interviews, and any time I was heading south from them, if the section of 270 you’re talking about gets busy, Google Maps would send me down Seven Locks to River. It usually had me get on 495 from River.
My dad used to work 5 blocks southwest of Dupont Circle and he’d take Clara Barton at friggin 7 am rather than ride metro to Dupont and walk 5 blocks. Even though his job before that was right in Dupont Circle and when he worked there, he bought a parking pass at the Hilton next to the Twinbrook metro in Rockville. He just refused to walk those 5 blocks.
Damn, Vienna to Silver Spring is no joke!

I live in a condo in Alexandria. It’s about 5 minutes to National, and maybe 15 to Georgetown. My morning commute to 13th and I takes about 17 minutes. Coming home is about 25. Hell, the condo next to mine (just completely refinished by the owners) is for rent for probably $1500 and you can park as many cars as you want.
![]() 04/10/2018 at 22:33 |

Yeah, it’s not the best commute.
Welcome back to the DMV, though!

My wife is pretty adamant about not being in an apartment-like setting. I can’t say I completely disagree with her. We’re in a townhouse right now and like the space. We don’t want to completely blow our budget on housing but hoping to find a place that suits us.

Ah I see. I’m in the centreville/fairfax area about 25 minutes from Georgetown and there’s tons of places available nearby. Lots of new construction pretty close to the metro, too.

I may have landed on a place in North Bethesda by the White Flint metro. Trying to get my mom to go check it out when she has a chance. Only thing is the rent is over $2k a month and while there’s plenty of parking none of it is covered. My job in Georgetown provides parking in the garage there so at least my car will still get to spend a decent amount of time indoors.

Yeah unless you find a townhouse with a garage, it’s a little tough to get covered parking unless you are in the tysons area. Having covered parking at work is a big plus, though. That’s the one major annoyance with working in DC.

There are a decent number of townhouses with garages in MD as well. It’s just they don’t start falling into my price range until they’re farther out from DC than I want to commute in to Georgetown from.
I got another job offer from a place in Tyson’s that wasn’t as good of an offer right at the beginning but had a sorta kinda maybe potential to be promoted relatively soon, but getting into and out of Tyson’s during rush hour is a disaster.

Thanks! Luckily I have family in the area to help with the move and scouting places to live. My mom checked out a 2-level condo for us today. We have juuuust enough time to get there without completely driving ourselves nuts but it’s still stressful.

Definitely appropriate.
On the plus side, the scenery on my drive to work along the Potomac river is beautiful so it’ll be a nicer place to sit in soul crushing traffic.

I hear you. At least you have some support system and like you mentioned you grew up there so you know what you’re doing. Stress is always going to come about but at least the reward will be huge!
