Toyota Prius liver transplant, a.k.a. hybrid battery replacement. I was hoping to dodge the bullet, but at 153,000 miles I got the Dread Triangle of Doom indicator, after 8k miles of ownership. I’m rebuilding it with a set of reconditioned cells from Electron Automotive.
It was a tough decision: new Toyota battery or reconditioned/tested cells? But at around $3500 new, versus $1000 reconditioned, in the end I couldn’t see pumping that much into the car at this age (2006) and mileage. I also paid $150 extra to extend the warranty from one year to two, which gets you cells in their next quality/health bracket.
Phase one complete: extraction of the original battery.

This will be interesting to see. I kinda want a volt but the batteries scare me.

IIRC, you can buy the individual cells if you want to venture deeper. Significantly cheaper, but a bit more risk.

I’ve done the individual cells for a couple of friends, I’ve never changed the whole pack. I’ve actually been thinking about making it a side business.
To anyone thinking about opening up one of these packs be very careful. Just imagine those videos of e-cigs catching on fire in peoples pockets, only these packs have enough amperage to weld 1/4" steel together.

It’s just like a giant RC car with any orange cable that can kill you. You’ve got some guts to work on that thing. I have never been fond of electricity in skull nuking amperage.

I’m amazed how much these have dropped and how small the batter actually is.
