Sounds like fun to me. Afghanistan in ‘01 we had a box we put over an old Soviet sewer to shit in. We had tubes we dug into the ground to piss in and later a Colonel complained about the smell and wanted us to pour bleach down the pipes...and we had to explain what happens when you mix ammonia and bleach, but I used WW1 logic. We later dug 2 slit trenches and would use one, then use one then light the other one on fire. We built boxes with doors at this time. You didn’t have privacy before.

We showered with a hose similar to these guys, cept it was winter. You learned a new appreciation for hot showers. Screaming was encouraged.

So yeah...this is what we get paid to do. I don’t mind living like shit as long as EVERYONE is living like shit. One day, I was covered in dust and godknows what and some guy in a fresh pressed uniform came up to critize my engineering project. I had to ask him who the F he was and when did he get here? He wasn’t one of us.

Many do. It is a trailer they prop up. It is mobile. It is for those days you are tired of the chowhall or you were in the brush for 10 days and just want a fucking cheeseburger

Yeah, I suspect it’s a feeling one could develop, probably... I’ve never been in the bush for 10 days so I’ll take your word for it.

I never quite understood the US army to be honest though....

I mean, you guys are supposed to honour veterans for their bravery and sacrifice but then the VA has been critically underfunded in the past, and sometimes soldiers are sent on wars with little to no justification or inteligence.

To honour something (in this case the army as a whole) is to understand when it’s appropriate to use it and know when it’s better to stay home, to honour something is to also keep it in the best condition possible.

I should post some pictures of the first FOB I was at in Afghanistan. Sounds like they are getting soft. You always bring a knife and your tobacco of choice when you get deployed. You bring what you think you need and then you double it. Then bring some more.

Yeah, I have my issues with the VA. My friends are encouraging me to go, but the last time I went I sat between a guy who was burned in an IED attack and one guy who had 1 leg. I am mostly intact. I left because I didn’t want to take time away from them. I haven’t been back.

There are philosophy debates on the measure of a good society: How they honor their old and their dead. Sometimes animals are included in this debate.

Generally, it is the same as anything else...once it is past its utility you toss it away and ignore it hoping it goes away. Much like when we give up our old cars.

Well, access to VA healthcare is your right as a veteran, the same way it’s their right to be attended by their countrymen for injuries sustained serving their country. Unlike objects we chose the laws of society and if you guys decided veterans should have healthcare, they need to have it; and the government should be frankly ashamed they do not provide enough.

I can understand why you left, but I’m sorry at the same time. There are probably many who stay away as you do. Thank you for sharing that. And yes about the cheeseburger. When I was active Army, in the 80s, the hardest part was scraping all of the icing off the cake so you could eat it. And it was a sodium-laden BK ham sandwich that I craved.

In Louisiana, in the 80s, we had these bags with shower nozzles on the bottom. I’d fill up two or three five-gallon jugs before hitting the rack, then after my guard duty in the middle of the night, I’d go to the shower, which was a few pallets stood up with tarps or something slung over them for a bit of privacy. And if it was 3 am, then nobody else would be up. I’d stand under the first five gallons, and I could feel the slime slowly rinse off myself. Then soap up with the second five gallons. But it was Louisiana and very warm outside.

“Sucking” is relative. Some situations definitely suck worse than others, and I think this is the point of the piece.

This is one of my favorite pics. This after after IED #2. Aim & timing was slightly off. Hit the rear quarter mainly.

Damn, Yo. How much shock blast did you feel? How are you feeling ten years on? What was your MOS? Did you ever actually see an enemy person in a gun sight?

It’s all over pretty quick. That one wasn’t so bad. Ten years on...eh. Knees hurt from time to time but I’m a pretty aggressive skier. My back has seen better days but it doesn’t bug me that much on most days. You get used to the ringing in your ears, although it is pretty annoying. I was a grunt, 11B.

What’s funny to me about this exchange is that you’ve got that picture of yourself with the shrapnel HumVee and you’ve been out for ten years already. Nobody realizes how long this has been going on.

I wasn’t trying to be a dick; I hope I didn’t come off that way.

I served back in the 80s when the hardest part was scraping enough icing off the cake so you could eat it. My bid ended right at Gulf I.

No biggie. I’m a big military buff but I have moderate asthma, so no army for me. the academic scholarship didn’t help either.
