Its gonna be my first. As of now I drive my dad’s CR-V but since he goes out more, I can’t use it when I want to. That, and I need something I can learn stick on and some wrenching. List of criteria:
Manual transmission
Up to $10,000, preferably less
Relatively fun to drive
Pretty cheap insurance
Something that I can wrench on, not too much though as this is the car I’ll DD
Oh yeah, daily driveable
Has good space to store bodies cargo
I’m 5'11", still growing, so nothing TOO small
Reliable
These are the main things, I’ll think of more later. My ZIP code is 34746, so something within 200 miles is fine (I’m not scared of a little road trip). Thanks y’all!

You think you need space, but you don’t need space.
Miata. In the running for best manual transmissions of the last few decades. Waaaaay below budget. Uhm... Fun? That’s literally what this car was designed for. Insurance is practically pennies. Very reliable, huge aftermarket, and can be fixed up with a 14mm wrench and Google. I’m 6'1, fit just fine. Lower the top and you can store as much as you need, plus the trunk is actually pretty good-sized.

As for the Miata, which generation is best? I personally dislike the NB for literally no reason, the NC is a little bubbly looking but actually cool in person, the ND is badass and the NA is the OG cool little hooner.

Depends what you want. For a first manual car, NA or NB would be the best. Especially if you’re trying to get a bit of wrenching experience (without being stranded).
Shit. Three years ago I couldn’t tell a wrench from a hammer and now I’m preparing for a major coolant system overhaul, engine swap and turbo build. All from buying a cheap Miata as my first manual car

Mazda3? I had an 08 standard ole 3 sport. Held two kid seats in back seat and i didnt have to fold it down for two suitcases laid flat in the back hatch. A manual 5 speed. Every time i searched the best handling manual tranny hatchback that could hold kid seats this was right on top. Did not dissapoint. I dont know how much wrenching you want, but there was enough room to reach everything because it was built for a big pumpkin turbo so without that you got space.

Good CarFax, too. I literally went to my cars.com app, used your ZIP and 150 miles, $10,000, manual, and selected a few reliable brands. Boom. If it’s a first car, you want something nice instead of something you always have to work on. This probably has more equipment than the CR-V y’all have. I’m proud of this find, I’m sorry haha.

I’d recommend a 1999-2003 Maxima like this one ( https://orlando.craigslist.org/cto/d/2003-nissan-maxima/6526572385.html ). They’re regarded as one of the best-driving four door cars of the time, they’re pretty reliable, plenty spacious, and I think manual ones are more common than with other cars in their class.

I hear there’s a Chrysler Sebring for sale in your area....
;-)
On a more serious note, get a used manual PT Cruiser. They’re dirt cheap, relatively cheap to insure, have easy to fold or remove rear seats and are reliable as long as you don’t neglect oil changes and address any cooling system issues (not expensive to fix, but those plastic/rubber bits need replacing every 5-7 years.)
And for more fun, get the GT version of the PT which has a 215-232hp turbo engine, a getrag manual and other upgrades bits.

Also don’t forget insurance. Insurance on a Si will cost more (or any cheap sporty car that young people buy) than you think. Saying that look at the “under dogs”, apart from ground clearance the insurance is why I got he Juke over the VT. The insurance was much cheaper.
There is this
Matrix XRS
, it has space for when you need it. The rear glass lifts separate from the trunk, the front passenger seat fold flat, & it has a the 2ZZGE with the glorious 8000rpm red line paired with a 6spd. It shares lots of parts with the Corolla so you won’t hunting for hard to find parts. It’s also well under budget at $3200.
There is also this 2009 Pontiac Solstice , for something sporty. This has the 2.4L EcoTec with 170hp. A drop top to enjoy the Florida sun, & a 5spd. Being a GM parts bin special parts will also be easy to find. It’s a bit higher at $9000.
With fuel cheap you could get this 2004 Pontiac GTO . The LS1, & 6spd is like butter on toast. It’s perfectly subtle, & can rip greasy burn outs. Being $9000, it’s lots of car for the money.
You can also brap everywhere with a 2013 Fiat 500 Abarth . It’s not as fast as the GTO, but makes a great noise. would you bite the Italian bullet for $10,000?

Everything Nissan made at the time had practically the same engine. I don’t think that was my post but I have spent time behind the wheel of one and they are quite good. It’s a very solid, capable chassis and it doesn’t feel all floppy and big like most large sedans. It was no slouch with an automatic so I’m sure the manual is even better to drive.
They did have rust problems but that shouldn’t be an issue where you are.

I dont know the gearing on newer generations but mine would do 62 in second 85 in third 105 in 4th. Nicely spaced gears. It was probably a solid 130+ car and with an intake sounded every bit the business. Its PLENTY quick enough for a newer driver to get in PLENTY of trouble.

I’ve read that Honda did want to put the better K20 and 6-speed into the EP3, but Acura objected because it would likely take away from RSX sales. That said, I’d still rather get an EP3 and swap in a better K than have to spend who knows what on a better paint job because Honda decided to cheap out on it 10 years ago.

No offense, but for just a few grand more, the 2018 EX is so much better that I don’t know why the 2018 LX is still there. The 2015 refresh did wonders for the CR-V; as you know, my mom has a refreshed model and it’s well equipped for the price. However, the new ones, while weird on the outside, are great inside, too.
If you have time, please give the Rio a look. It’s a lot more reasonable than an old Miata or something haha.

1st gen Mini like mine.
Pretty reliable and decently easy to work on. Although if you need to do anything under the hood, you would most probably need to take the front bumper off.
If you use aftermarket parts, they are cheapish. Lots of DIY and good community (forums): https://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/1st-generation-minis-183/
And they are fun to drive. The steering feel and shift action is awesome!
You should be able to find them around $5k and 100k to 150k miles.
Do all these check before you buy tho:

If you want reliable, cheap, peppier than expected, manual transmission and simple enough to wrench on, I always bring up the car I have as it gets overlooked for being exactly what it is....i.e. a 2006-2010 Hyundai Accent hatchback.
They are very reliable, cheap as chips, the hatchbacks have folding rear seats to carry more stuff, plus the hatchbacks look decently sporty...at least to me. Integrated rear hatch spoiler as standard, side repeaters, etc.
Not a huge aftermarket for them, but if you want to spiff it up a bit there are things like lowering and intake kits available. Parts are cheap as well, and a lot of aftermarket performance parts are cross compatible from the Kia Rio of the same vintage as they were sister vehicles and the Rio had the same engine/trans.

All these replies and nobody suggested a Veloster yet. Depending on how close to $10k you want to go you could get a Turbo or you could a low mileage NA with the manual for around $7k. I test drove them when they first came out. Really solid little cars. Manual is pretty well sorted though the non-turbos arent all that fast. There were several reasons I didn’t end up buying one but I think it would make a perfect first car. New enough you might even be able to get one with warranty left on it in budget, safer than something older, and insurance should be dirt cheap based on my experience insuring Hyundai’s in the past.

You can get a very good car for $3000
I’d suggest a Matrix, Vibe, xA, or xB
The Matrix/Vibe were available with the 2ZZ from 03-06 (Matrix XRS and Vibe GT). 8200 rpm redline, but they do require premium. However, even the base 1ZZ motor is a good engine and very reliable and economical.
Ford did sell the Focus wagon in the US until 2007, and it was available with a manual transmission, but they are not quite as easy to find. However, they are reasonably fun to drive and very practical. Not too difficult to work on. DO NOT get a 2000 Focus! The early cars were terrible. They got much better from 2002-on. Keep in mind that it was offered in both hatchback and wagon form, but the wagon has much more room!
The Mazda 6 was available in wagon form from 2004-2007, and it was even available with a manual transmission, but the wagons were only sold with the V6.
Mazda also used to sell the 5 cute lil minivan that might suit your needs. Not the CX-5, not the MX-5, not the Protege5, just 5. Yes, they were available with a stick! Yes, they are fun to drive! Same exact mechanical shit as the 3, same suspension as the MS3. It has three rows of 2 seats. Basically a Mazda 3 with a LOT more room!
Here’s a manual Mazda 5 at a good price
(there’s another manual 5 in Hollywood, but it is much more expensive)
Also, the CRV is available with a stick and you can learn wrenching on one (maybe not your dad’s, but you can get one of your own) (is your dad’s CRV automatic or stick?)
I hope you like my suggestions

Thanks, this was helpful! Our CR-V is the 2013, and they stopped offering the manual in’06. Welp.

The Veloster might be a bit too small for his needs. An Elantra Touring like this
2009 one
might be a better choice.

I haven’t been Following the prices on these too closely, but that seems like a pretty good deal to me. I dig the color. As with most of the suggestions, I’d see if you can find one close on a dealer lot to check out before heading to Miami. Is there a Carmax in Tampa? That might be a good place to check out a few cars - they’ll be a little newer and more expensive than what you’re looking for but with some luck you’ll find things there that are the same generation as things you’ll find in your budget in a private sale. If you’re uncomfortable driving anything there because you know you won’t buy it I’d still say it’s worth walking around their lot to see some things in person. When my wife bought her last car we scratched like 3 things off the list just by seeing the interiors in person and realizing they looked better in photos.

I’m voting for a Honda Accord. Which sounds boring but here me out.
Your young so expenses are important, this will be cheap to insure, gas up, fix and maintain
It will be pretty reliable and should be relatively straightforward to learn to wrench on.
It should be big enough for you
Honda is known for it’s great manual transmissions
It is not too fast, which sounds like a downside but is important because it will help keep you safe. Also it is a safe car based on ratings.
It’s practical with its four doors and trunk.
You can get a nice one within your budget
It will probably last through your college too.
Here are a few examples in your area off of autotrader.
Pretty close to your zipcode $6,995
Not as practical (its a coupe) but a better color and cheaper $5,900
Farther away but another good sedan $6,700
Personally I would go for one of the sedans because I drove a lot of my friends around in high school and still do now that I’m in college. It’s a pain to get people in the back of a coupe.

I just did a quick search on Autotrader for Honda Fits, manual transmission, $11,000 or less, within 200 miles of your ZIP code, and saw a handful of promising options, especially from the second generation model.

I have NOTHING against Accords at all! I’ve actually been waiting for someone to suggest them. Thanks!

Sedan or wagon you can’t go wrong with a Mazda 3, so much better than the Honda or Toyota. I bought this car in 2009 and have no intention of getting rid of it any day soon.

I’ve got something for a few grand that might check at least one or two boxes.
It actually came from not all that far from where you are, so its done the trip somewhat recently.

I thought what you actually meant was “it’s not that what it isn’t not the car HE had need of... whomever he may have not been.”

I commented a loaded newer Rio on here! The older Accents and Rios barely have any safety gear (ABS, etc), but the 2012-present is a good find. I’m 6'5" and I fit up front in a redesigned 2018 model.

Well, OK. It’s about 1500 miles from you, but I’ve done that trip overnight many times, if it’s any consolation (and once nonstop, but I don’t recommend that).

Don’t do a Panther... or at least, not that specific Panther. They’re shit. I grew up with a 1982 Mercury Grand Marquis... Basically that car with less weight and a bit less power... V8 with V6 levels of power, shitty fuel economy, crappy handling, no-feel-steer-with-your-pinky power steering...
You’re better off with a 2004+ Prius. The Prius will be faster, handle better, use less than half the fuel, be more reliable and more durable.

The only safety gear I ‘miss’ is the fact I don’t have side curtain airbags, but then again, neither did my old Impreza.
I’ve lived without ABS and traction control for 5 years now and I’m still kicking, though I guess in an emergency, they would be helpful.
I agree though, the generation of Accent and Rio after mine is a fine choice as well!
