Windows is forcing me to install the latest update. The first time, I rolled back because it killed my internet access. The second time, I tried to stop it mid update, and it crashed. Now, it’s a vicious cycle of recovering image with USB, update, restart after update at which point it stops at 6%, reboot, reverting to previous version, log in, crashes, use the USB to recover and start over.

WHAT THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO DO?!

Windows 10 I presume. Switch your connection to metered from settings. It won’t auto update at least most updates that way.

Join the legions of people who hate Windows 10 with a passion. Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s really a way to stop auto updates (thanks Microsoft). Try letting it update and then go through the settings and try to fix your Internet problems or by updating drivers or rebooting routers and such. Worst case you can revert back again. If nothing works try picking up a copy of Win7 maybe.

I am not technical at all and find it a ton more enjoyable and peaceful-pleasant than Windows. Whether you can truly switch depends on whether you need to run Windows specific software.

The only way you can stop it is by sinkholing every single request to Microsoft-owned domains by using your own DNS server of sorts. You can do this by hooking up a RasPi to your network and routing all network traffic through it.

It’s a nuclear option with lots of configuring, but once it’s set up there’s very little chance Microsoft could push an update without you having control on whether it drops it on your computer or not.

You just have to watch out for the stupid peer-to-peer sharing of updates which is definitely not a security loophole for avid malware writers.

I can’t update. After it asks to restart the computer, the blue screen that says “Working on Updates” gets stuck at 6%. I literally can’t even update it now. Because that was my plan, update it again and run the installation software for my WiFi adapter.

Backup, clean install and update everything, and try again. Also try calling Microsoft Customer Care, and/or the manufacturer since it has a driver issue after updates.

11/12 of my Windows 10 machines (2 self-made desktops, 4 laptops, 2 tablets, and 4 Lumias) update no problem. The $80 MicroCenter tablet (WinBook 8") has only 32GB internal storage, so I have to manually remind Windows to download updates to a USB stick or MicroSD card and then install them.
