Chrysler Sebring? I don’t do Chrysler Sebrings. I had... a bad experience.

For real, though- F the 2.7L.

Worked with a lady who had one of those for a long time in the red/burgundy color - she really liked it. Only got rid of it when they moved down to AZ.

if you see this underhood:

Run.

2001-2002 were right in the sludge-prone years. I’d be especially afraid of something with that low mileage; who knows how much shit has been sitting in the oil?

If it has the 2.7 you’ll want to check for sludge. The early 2k 2.7s were notorious for sludge.

2.7 ,3.7 and 4.7 all crap in my experience.

I’m not a mechanical authority, but that sounds pretty nice. The engine concerns are big, but otherwise, that seems like a fair deal for what’s essentially a brand new 2001 Sebring Convertible.

If it’s a 2.7, then 3 areas to watch... use synthetic oil and don’t skip on oil changes, keep an eye on coolant leaking into oil from the water pump and make sure the PCV system is in good shape.

Those are the 3 main factors that contribute to the sludge problem these engines are known for.

That engine sounds like a real pain. I’ll have to check to make sure it isn’t that one.

Well I’ll be damned. It is the 2.7. Turns out that’s the only engine option for it. Just Googled it :(

It still might be worth getting if it’s cheap. $7500 is not cheap. I would offer $5000.

Yeah. But knowing how my neighbors are, they’d say some shit like “oh, but it’s a DROPTOP with lo miles!” The most “I know what I have” people ever xD

One way to handle that is to take the faux-poor approach... “$5000 is all I can afford. If you get a better offer, take it. But call me if you want to reconsider.”

I’d actually use their logic against them and trick them into lowering it (i.e. talking like them, using same speech patterns/ descriptive methods, act friendly, etc.) But that’s not a bad idea either.

Oh yeah... but using their own logic against them, if they’re the “I know what I have” types, is likely to be too unpleasant and stressful.

“I know what I got”

“Yeah, you’ve got a car that’s 18 years old, has been sitting a lot (which likely means brittle rubber bits), is not in any way a classic, with an engine prone to sludge problems, from a brand with little to no cachet. You should be thankful I’m offering as much as I am.”

And from there I can see the conversation going downhill into an argument ending with “get off my lawn”.
