Milwaukee’s new streetcar looks like a beer with a nice head of foam on it.

This is the dumbest project...I’ll be shocked if it doesn’t get axed within 10 years

Why have you guys suddenly started building trams all over the place. It’s seems every city west of New York is opening a new tram line on a weekly basis.

I’ve noticed a lot of opposition to it. I don’t even know what its supposed to cost and where its supposed to run, but its not like Milwaukee’s bus system is overworked, or the roads are overused the last time I checked.

Probably just something for Millenials who are too hip to drive or ride the bus to use.

Looks like it will just do a 5 block loop that you could probably walk up or down in 15 minutes. Maybe useful when it’s raining or in winter, I guess?

I don’t really know anyone who really supports it...it doesn’t really go anywhere useful and runs on the streets anyways so gets stuck just like a bus. Had they done some sort of light rail with it’s own dedicated track I would have been on board...but this just looks like this to me

Fashion? One place gets them, others can’t be seen to be left behind.

It has battery backup for when it’s not connected to the overhead catenary.

Neat.

El Paso is also putting (back) in street cars downtown that no one is really sure will be used. The only thing I like about the project is that they restored the original 1950's street cars last used in El Paso. They’ve just been sitting outside next to an runway at the El Paso airport for the last 30 or 40 years, and thanks to being in the desert southwest they didn’t actually rust away to nothing.

Street car? Give me bus rapid transit or give me death!

Now THAT would have been a project I’d get behind.

I rode on some 1920's and 30's cars that were restored and see use for special engagements, events, and a run to a local orchard:

They even have some cars that ran in Milwaukee, so it’d be perfect to bring them back.

ive ridden cincinnatis new street car system but yeah i dont really understand the purpose. though it does save you from having to walk up some substantial hills in the downtown area

Just brought it back to Detroit too...except they don’t let it run far enough to be really functional.

Same thing here in Detroit. There was a reason they paved over the streetcar tracks years ago. Such a waste

Streetcars combine the worst traits of buses with the worst traits of light rail.

Basically, Americans don’t like riding the bus. They consider it unreliable transportation for poor people. People have a more positive view of rail-based transport. Light-rail/tram type systems get you that without the massive expense of building a subway.

And New York is of course planning to build a line: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklyn%E2%80%93Queens_Connector

No one is going to give you bus rapid transit though. They might say they are building a BRT line, but then it’s too tempting to add more stops, and no one wants to give up traffic lanes for dedicated bus lanes, even getting signals that change when a bus approaches is hard.

I used to live in Eugene Oregon and they had a great BRT system.

My new neighborhood in the Midwest is getting a BRT-lite system next year; stops are determined and are certainly less than the local I take now; and it’ll have light priority but not dedicated lanes. Anything is better than a local that stops every freaking 2 blocks though.
