I built the rig I’m typing this from to handle a 1080... and have been waiting for two years to get rid of the 1060 I bought as a “placeholder” thanks to crypto. I REALLY hope this is true.

Still banging my head why I didn’t buy that $600 1080 back during Boxing Day. My phone could’ve been free.

I managed to get an EVGA 1080 Hyrdro Copper just the other day for MSRP, and EVGA had more than one in stock. I jumped on that shit so quickly.

EVGA may have a 1080 Hydro Copper still in stock at MSRP. I got one the other day for my Ryzen 5 build.
But I guess it’s a moot point if you don’t want to do a custom water loop.

I saw the title and immediately thought “Did Mueller indict Trump?! Did the fucker resign???”
I mean, good news anyway, I guess.

Oh I will. I just finished my Threadripper build, but I wanted to clean my desk and get all my Funko Pops up before I take more pictures. But I can give you a sneak peek:
I got all the pieces back on Black Friday, but it’s taken me this long thanks to the custom loop. I’ve never done a custom loop before so this was a huge learning curve. On top of that, I bought acrylic tubing which everyone says not to do. But I managed to get it all done without zero leaks, which I’m proud of.
The specs of my build: Threadripper 1950x, Gigabyte X399 Aurous Gaming 7, one EVGA GTX 1080 Ti Hydro Copper 11gb, a Gigabyte GTX 1060 3gb, a 1tb Samsung Evo M.2 NMVe drive, another 500gb Samsung Evo M.2 NMVe, and also a 500gb WD Black M.2 NMVe. RAM is G SKill Trident RGB 32g 3600. PSU is a 1200 watt EVGA Platinum supply. Originally I had an 850 supply but realized I may need more power.
And now the water loop. All the radiators and fittings are Alphacool. In the bottom section, I have a 360x45mm radiator. That’s fed by the pump, and then goes to a 240x30mm X-Flow radiator; that feeds an XSPC TR4 water block. That goes to another 360x45mm radiator which then feeds a 140x30mm radiator which finally feeds the 1080 Ti and that dumps into a 250mm Eisbecher Helix reservoir. I accidentally broke the UV light, though. Whoops. And the fluid I’m using is Primochill’s new Vue fluid. I bought it just before everyone started to find out it wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be. But this first loop is a learning experience.
I’ve done some stress testing so far and I think I have plenty of cooling. With an ambient case temperature of about 25 C the GPU only got up to 32 degrees, and the CPU hovered between 30 and 40 degrees. I haven’t done any heat soaking yet.

The acrylic is totally worth it! That fluid looks incredibly cool. I would be after those wild fans in your vid right now but my case is a 5 fan beast from NZXT that is completely silent. Totally lucked out!

It is a completely ridiculous overbuilt system. I think I started out looking at a Ryzen 7 and regular 1070, but then I just decided to throw caution to the wind and go balls to the wall.
The acrylic tubing was, in the end, the right choice. PETG looks like it gets cloudy super quickly, and Primochill Vue would probably make it worse. If I could bend glass I would have gone with that. The Vue does look awesome, but I want to re-route the plumbing of the reservoir so that the hot fluid gets dumped in the top and agitates it more. Right now with the pump on a lower speed the reservoir barely moves.
I also need to learn more about fan control, and probably move some of the fan headers around so I can turn off sections when the temperatures allow it. I would prefer a quieter system.

PC gaming is totally one of those hobbies where you will never hurt yourself by splurging. More storage space, faster processor, whatever. Why not play games on ultra for 5 years instead of 3 without a new card!

This is my second gaming system and the last one lasted me eight years before the CPU finally started to die. I went pretty nuts on that one too, but I had no idea what I was doing.
With this
one
I have learned things over the years, and I also had another Oppo member (who never comes on) help me spend my money. He’s the one that got me to go AMD, and I’m glad I did. He got a Ryzen 5. We actually both have the same Ryzen 5 and motherboard. We also both have the EVGA DG87 that we bought a year ago, but I ended up not using it and went with the Thermaltake X71 because I thought I could get both 360's in the bottom, but it turns out nope. We both regret getting the EVGA because it’s kind of ass-backward.
I also take my overkill to monitors too. I started with two 23" HD monitors. Then one went up in smoke a few years later so I upgraded to THREE 24" 1200 monitors. And this time I bought two 4k 28" monitors (Samsung), another 1080 27" AOC HD monitor, and I hung two of my Dell monitors above those, so I have five monitors at my desk now. And when G-Sync HDR monitors come out I’ll get one of those and figure out a new lair setup.

I need a triple setup at some point! And then the racing wheel would come next. And a joystick... no desk space/inadequate GPU though. NVIDIA’s companion software has been great for me so far, never had an issue with an update and its extremely intuitive. Supposedly they optimize for new games with every update but I think that’s just a hotfix for certain systems that reported issues in benchmarking. Still a nice feature regardless. Its also possible that I never experience the optimization issues people complain about because they are so on top of it.
This is my first gaming PC, I traded in my XB1 after Halo 5 came out and became the microtransactioney straw that broke the camel’s back. I love playing indies and the devs are so much more responsive/engaged with their communities on PC imo. Sure, there is a ton of garbage on steam, but also way more great stuff made by passionate midsized teams than you’d find on console. AAA games have the console market cornered.
My only major issue is fucking windows 10. It drives me insane.

Oh god don’t get me started on Windows. I actually bought a Pixelbook because I was tired of getting to class and open my laptop and it’s updating for the umpteenth time. But obviously I’m stuck with W10 on my tower so I constantly encounter it changing settings, moving shit around, and just doing dumb things for no reason.
As far as games go, I have a PS3 and PS4 but I really don’t play them very much. I either never have time, or when I do I’m too tired and just want to watch a show or movie. But I like the able to play a game when I feel like it. Hopefully my new Switch, with it being portable, will let me play a little more often.

The task bar is the main issue I have. The stupid thing WILL NOT auto hide 100% of the time on this machine or the laptop I had for work. There is no fix other than clicking on “Cortana” (for fuck’s sake, Halo was fun but come on MS) and then back to your desktop. It blocks all bottom edge controls on any media you can think of: YT, Soundcloud, etc. Office applications too. I haven’t tried an aftermarket taskbar yet though but worry it’d be futile.

Thankfully I haven’t had that issue. But I’m sure Windows will get creative and do something stupid on my computer.
